To me there are a few key years in film that shaped generations, 1939, 1984, 1994, and 1999. There's practically nothing from those years on this particular list aside from Pulp Fiction.

I just watched the 3rd man in the past hour and it is a brilliant film on many levels.

Yeah... people with consciences hate conservatives. Imagine that. What a concept. If only conservatives didn't do so many bad things and didn't have so many bad values. Well... you almost had me = I do (know) Shawshank Redemption is indeed a bad film. Yes, it's overrated. Because it is actually a terrible film. It's insufferably corny, has a considerable tone problem, is poorly written, and insulting to the audience's intelligence. Those who are paying attention.

Citizen Kane is, in fact, superior to Casablanca. And... who said Casablanca was a conservative classic? Its sympathies are with socialism and not rewarding the police force with a glowing cinematic portrayal for being predatory, are they not? The only Welles' film I've seen that Casablanca is superior to is Touch of Evil. But... I've only seen 2 Orson Welles films. So.

Its true that Jaws and Star Wars did ruin it for alot of of auteur directors at the time. Afterwards, especially in the 80s, Scorcese, Coppella, Altman and many others had trouble getting their visions come to life because the studios only wanted action and science fiction. Alot of them rebounded in the 90s though when artistic films became cool again so theres that.

Black Panther is not a great film. Not really even a good film. It only gets the attention because of wokeism. Later generations will ignore it.

Space Odyssey is definitely overrated, and always put very high on Top 10 lists, sometimes #1.........Shawshank is good, not a B-, but it's not Top 10 All Time or anything.

The Magnificent Seven is the best American movie for the following reasons: It is a Western, the quintessential American movie genre. If you pay attention to the language and the plot, it is a commentary on so many topics: the passing of West; the fantasy that you can get someone else to fight your battles; and that freedom ultimately requires sacrifice, to mention a few. It also had probably the most all star cast: Yule Brenner, Steve McQueen, Eli Wallach, James Coburn (17 lines, but still a major presence), Charles Bronson to name a few. Plus a killer music score that went on to become and still is the iconic American theme.

As much as this guys opinions on Shawshank, Star wars, and pulp fiction annoy me I think he has the right to such opinions (even if they are wrong)

The list except for the GF, Casablanca, City Lights , Lawrence of Arabia, Citizen Kane, Vertigo, Psycho, GF, 3rd Man is abominable. I agree this time with Klavan’s ratings!

I hope he understands how unbelievably close minded you have to be to think that The Godfather is the newest film that can be considered one of the best films of all time. Especially since the 70's as a whole is widely considered the best decade in film history (maybe 2nd to the 50's), and The Godfather came out towards the beginning of that decade.

I always thought A New Hope was better and more complete than Empire Strikes Back.

This guy has the worst taste, if he doesn't agree 100% with the political views of a film he writes it off as "liberal" and he does not care about the quality of it.

Vertigo. Did you ever stop to think how ridiculously overplotted it is? Couldn't the guy have found a much, much, much easier way to bump off his wife? Why did he have to involve so many other people? And leave the one person who could finger him still alive? And how'd he get his wife up to the bell tower and then get away without anyone seeing him? As filmmaking goes, I love it. But the plot is sooooo dubious.

This guy either wants to get called a philospher type cinephile or he just doesn't know a shit .

“2001” is one of the most important films of the last 75 years, great story and technically very advanced for its time, this guy is wrong about a lot of these films, and he omits some great ones.
