Whistle-Stop - Positioning

Video Overview & Insights

The ERRA folk have been busy again. This time they’ve produced a Whistle-Stop video about Positioning. This is something that all referees, regardless of their level of experience, need to work on.

This is helpful to a point. If you are refereeing with ARs & comms, you adopt different positions to those a sole referee should use. It would be very helpful to community refs to have the optimal positions explained for their games. Most new refs try to adopt what they see on TV, which in the community game is quite suboptimal.

The video is presented by Alex Marsh of Gloucester and District Referee Society and provides some handy rules of thumb about where to stand when it comes to:

1. Tackle & Ruck

2. Scrum

3. Lineout

4. Maul

As Alex points out, there are no rights or wrongs, but it pays to be in the best position possible.

If you are working out how best to position yourself in 2018, we think this video is a pretty good place to start.
