I really do miss David Letterman, he was great. Stephen Colbert was terrible. I never did watch him.

Theory here since we all know this show was a moneymaker for CBS:

The deal with Byron Allen is short term. Colbert may still be under contract that was amended to be non-exclusive.

CBS bows to Donald in 2026. Takes this program off air to get Paramount Skydance's, the CBS parent company, acquisition of WB to go through 47's FCC and government as it today. Then they sit out the next 2 years and watch the 2026 midterms closely.

Fall 2028 or Spring 2029, depending on Election 2028, the triumphant return of THE LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT.

Even with all they've done to gut all the news and other news programming at cbs it's truly interesting that the end of the late show is also the event by which people are processing the seeming death throes of one of the foundational tv networks.
And really everyone also seems to agree that this decision murdered any chance of the streaming platform succeeding... What even is business?
