The Domino Effect of Baseball, a breakdown

Video Overview & Insights

#baseball #MLB

That second game with Altuve leading off the 8th, could that LF have tried to catch that? It's 3-0, there's not much difference between a single and a double or even triple, there's a BIG difference between a single and a fly out.

Although if Culberson doesn’t steal second the first baseman is holding the runner on and the grounder may get through for a hit. Assuming, of course, the pitcher throws the same pitch in the same location AND the hitter is still swinging away and still trying to hit it to the right side.

Love these videos that teach newer fans and those who never played (like me) some of the strategy of the game.

My Cincinnati Little League coach would have busted my ass for not turning the double play.

When I began watching and playing baseball in the 6os, smallball was de rigueur. You played for a run. Then home runs became everything, and smallball almost died, but it seems that even managers no longer think of the consequences of smallball. The manager should have put the word out to the infield to go for two and let the run score. No. Instead, they lose the game. They got what they deserved.

I love your takes on games. Thank you

3:11 Looks like the arm was pushed by the leg. Does it have to be the gloved ball touching?

@greggweber9967
@

Born and raised in Dallas hundred percent arrangers fan but yeah you’re right you gotta get that double play the trade-off of one run when you’ve got three is heads up baseball get the double play let the bases be empty and continue to do your job on the field not every game is going to be a shut outtake the double play

@TheBilldozerTx
@

My friends will watch baseball but they didn’t play it at least not at a highly competitive level they don’t understand the chess game. Your breakdowns are over the top bad ass sometimes I see things you don’t and sometimes you think see things I don’t so keep it up and give me more.

@TheBilldozerTx
@

This why I move baseball. My favorite manager the Cardinals ever had was Whitney Herzog. The White Rat was great at these types of strategies. And it pained me when baseball was in the mindset that defense wasn't that important. My favorite player of all time Ozzie Smith, defense was his thing.

@stuffingtonjfluffypantsiii
@

Mf how tf can the Yankees not do simple stuff like this. How can they expect to win a ws? They will never win one under cashman unless Judge has a crazy good postseason. Which is another problem as well šŸ¤¦šŸ½ā€ā™‚ļø

@leoa7421
@

8:24 in a 3-0 game he should have gone for the double play and conceded that one run. Altuve could run that out a throw or two longer before the Rangers clubbed it, and there could potentially be bases loaded, 0 out, and potential go ahead run at the plate

@sammycampbell1654
@

the HR is the second most boring play in baseball behind the strikeout

@mmidnite9910
@

Yes, smallball breeds domino effects, which are the special joy and unique subtlety of baseball. Great analysis.

@drewdegen9043
@

I dont care what anybody says, throwing that home on a non force when its 3 nothing, no outs!!?? Yeah, you 100% go to second for the double play!! The run sucks, but youre still up, with 2 outs and the bases cleared!! The best case scenario going to home, is you get a single out, but youve still got a guy in scoring position anyway!! Or you bobble it and now youve got nothing!! Terrible, TERRIBLE idea throwing to home in that situation!! Im far from a baseball expert, so thats just my opinion, but it seems like a statistical no brainer??šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Get him on, get him over, get him in.

@samael4550
@

At 3:15 that was an amazing slide.
Also, they should have gotten 2 outs and let the run score. 1 scores but then bases are cleared. If not, its still 2 guys on. Rally isnt over. I just know when I was playing, if we had 2 on and they rolled a dp, it kills momentum.

@Jekyll9745

Small ball is my favorite form of baseball

@theamazinghippopotomonstro9942
@

6:38 kind of missed that: down three with nobody out, it’s almost no advantage to go to third.

@ibperson7765
@

Thank you for covering a sport, not little league or cricket etc

@ibperson7765
@

This process of baseball has been lost on the Yankees for years. Making the other team work instead of constant strike outs or pop outs makes the other team work harder and errors.

@Flokeeylo
@

Why didn't Houston throw to third to get the out?

Love it!!

always great commentary Mr. Jomboy. Keep up the great work

@joegallagher1842

i think smallball is much funner to watch than the old steroid era. I love most of the new rules in baseball, bigger bases for more steals. pitch clock can be good but they shuold get more time in post season and i hope the dont start the runner on second in the postseason late innings.

@chrisc765
@

Did they win the first one?

@MeanBeanComedy
@

3:09 This is beautiful. It's one of those athletic moves only the guys with real God-given talent can do. You can work your butt off, and if you don't got "it," you can't pull this off.

@MeanBeanComedy
@

i respect the breakdown for people who don’t know the game but man it was weird having the game explained to me like i was 5 again lol

@Savies
@

I love to watch runs manufactured!!šŸ§”šŸ–¤

@bhouse8o8
@

People love home runs when they're at the park but I find it so boring to watch baseball when it's just giant dudes crushing home runs back and forth. This is so much more fun to watch!

@MightyManotaur22
@

I completely agree that you let the runner go home and take the out. I’d take that trade for one out, let alone the double play. I coach my son’s ball team by and I drilled into them all year that they take the force at first over trying to make the play at home plate every single time. Outs are way too valuable. That is priority one for the defence.

@shaununger9350
@

That 2nd steal with the arm and leg dodge was insane in slow motion

Not a huge baseball fan, but im a yankees fan. I remember in the early years of their late 90's dynasty i used to listen to the mets at work bc the yankees would win no matter what, and it was so often small ball. It was ridiculous. Repeatedly would be top of the 9th, 1 out, no runners, Yankees down 12-2 turn to the Mets. Check to see the final score 15 minutes later, still top of the 9th, Yankees up 15-12 and 2 outs. So many innings were single, walk, fielders choice on a failed dp, stolen base, sac fly, 11 pitch walk, single, single..,

@KASeltzer
@

Nice vid! Good to see one now and again without someone yelling and getting ejected

@AustinIsTheGreatest
@

I ā¤ your baseball breakdowns! Xxx000

@claybadger
@

Yup. Jomboy calls it a domino effect, but I call it a butterfly effect. Same. Same.
And it is probably the main reason I love this game and the only reason I wasn't thrilled about the NL adopting the DH.
I feel it took part of this small ball dynamic out of the game.

@dvhughesdesign
@

Bro keep this up! Been following you for years and love your stuff. Keep baseball alive!

@bendavid4596

At 3:46 isn’t that an illegal shift? I thought two fielders had to be on either side of 2B?

I'm a baseball guy, and definitely see the value of this breakdown, especially for the casual fan. Well done.

small ball play is my favorite kind. makes things much more exciting. i've always said bc it was said to me once, "base hits win ball games".

Where’s the lipsynching cussing? You’re the only YouTuber who actuallly makes it acceptable, and funny. I can’t imagine no player didn’t say ā€œf-ā€œ these entire games.
