Sorry to flood your comments section but brevity is my weakest skill :) There's a documentary about life in Russian military flight school...... it's brutal; recruits having to hold weights above their heads while getting sucker-punched in the gut by superiors, among other pointless abuse. In terms of seeing the actual aircraft I really wish to see and hear the MiG-29 and really, based on my comment about their excessive power, any other MiG- and Su- would do:) One thing it would be cool to see here is the RADAR display...... how different it is to American interface. Thank u 4 this!

As I trust the physics in flight simulator DCS World, one thing I've seen consistently is the MiG- and Su- aircraft engines require "taming" throughout the flight...... as in extreme thrust that needs constant attention. That of course is contingent upon my just slightly above amateur skills. I've heard the amount of power in their engines compared to "killing a fly with a hammer". The MiG-29 is IMO the most manageable. One other notable feature is that the visual interface to avionics, such as RADAR detection and tracking, is what I'd call "abbreviated" compared to non-Russian aircraft.

I still don't understand why Ucraine does not use machine guns and anti aircraft guns in order to get the Saheed drones down ( this guns exists on ground platforms and on helicopters and some of the aircraft and are much cheaper than those air to air missiles). I personally don't have any idea what are the F 16 s and Mirage s doing in Ucraine apart from sporadically getting down cruise missiles and Saheed drones.... It will be very if anyone could provide some information about this subject... Finally: I really hope that NATO will provide Ucraine with Grippens and Rafalles much earlier than" some years in the future".... German MiG29 were used in Red Flag excercises against f16 and other western fighter jets. Maybe it would be interesting to hear about their experiences.

What a fantastic interview. I have so much empathy for the tough job the Ukrainian air force has to do. I am a former F-15 avionics maintainer and it is so cool to get a glimpse at the cockpit layout of our former adversaries. In 1993, Langley AFB hosted one of the first fighter exchanges between russia and the US, where they brought a team of two Su-27s to fly with our Eagles. At that time, the future looked so bright and I anticipated a future of joint exercises and international peacekeeping missions with a free russia. Sadly, it didn't take long for that vision to dim and in the intervening years I realized we had so much more in common ideologically with the former Soviet and Warsaw Pact nations that really were still fighting for their freedom. I wish the US had taken stronger steps to stand with our Ukrainian allies to close the skies over Ukraine against russian aerial threats. Hell, we had an F-15E squadron in the country training just before pulling out due to concerns of the impending invasion. I feel that Ukraine's current situation would look much different if the US had demonstrated steadfast support in the face of aggression rather than turning tail and abandoning our partners.

Gotta give it to the guys doing it every day with these old Mig 29s. The old Soviet cockpit designs don't do a lot to help the pilot workload. I'd love to see some reactions if they ever get a chance to fly something like an F-16

Propaganda crap. Ukies don't fly over the line of contact unless in VERY rare instances they are ordered to do a suicide mission. Otherwise they are targeted and either mission-killed (forcing them to drop ordnance and run) or just killed. And they prefer to hide mostly, because Russians have total air dominance. Ukrainian air force stays as far away from LOC as it can, defending central and western Ukraine
MiG-29 in Ukrainian service are completely obsolescent, being Cold War inheritance that was VERY poorly maintained and barely upgraded if at all. Some upgrades were made, but the mission capability is hopelessly behind modern nations. So it can fire some HARMs, and maybe Storm Shadows, after literally jury-rigging some gear onto it, but that's all. The radar and EW suite are circa late-80/early-90s. And these pilots are not all that well-trained either. Those that survived up until now, have no ability to perform anything beyond long-range (up to what missile allows, which isn't much since those are old R-27s) intercepts or launch a stand-off weapon. And that's that.

Insaine to do A2G and be lit up and fired on by several different systems... on every mission. No american pilot has experienced that since Vietnam. Another thing that I think Preston missed, is that if you have your own fighters hunting for Shaheds they are also in the same target space and will be very hard to segregate from the Shaheds for any other air defence unit.
