@KackyMuseI love listening to these in the car!
@judithwolford6604how different the tale had he discovered from cook that Pritchard had already packed and departed the place just as he was telling himself that she had to go.
@davegubbins4428Harenger's a piece of work ๐
but what a lovely story of the times.
Sex is overrated. And this story makes a good point about that. Its actually a happy and real story.
@JoseAl-e4jWhere do you find a woman like that? He referred to her as a ruby, and that brought to my mind the little poem in Proverbs 30, which is recited by the Jews of Baghdad on Friday evening, the beginning of the Sabbath. She is in biblical Hebrew, Esheth Hayil, a caring, resourceful wife who is dedicated to the welfare of her husband and her children. For a more joyful, funny story, I suggest The Luncheon, which I taught at one time at a college.
@victorsasson1911Thank you. Mr. Maugham had me laughing out loud a couple times. I really do love his humor.
@INFJFPweirdInteresting story and dynamic. Both craved intimacy but not love
@pjsdoggy123I think they're both unfeeling towards others for different reasons. However, they will eventually get married for convenience and to ease a loneliness that each is unaware of.
@lawrencegoldwormRichard is a blind man, a sad man!

@glendacame5931Brilliant story full of irony and insight written by a master, the great Mr. Maugham.

@animatedstories8888Why was I so captivated by this? Not my thing at all butโฆ.
@SOWATruthPart 2?
@TheOutlier-c6oThe story reminds me of Hegel's Master/Slave dialectics. As much as the slave needs the master , the master is enslaved by the slave.
@Andywilliams-sh9lyI discovere Somerset Maugham at age 14. This is one of my favourites of his short stories. Another is, "The Unconquered."
@normasouthwood3182This narrative is brilliant ๐โค

@basketballfan5763This is my second Somerset Maughan story in as many days.. who knew he was so good?? ๐๐
@basketballfan5763Can I ask who this wonderful narrator is??
@basketballfan5763I think respectfully that you have misconstrued the situation.
@chimerat8012I met an eldery gentleman, a contemorary of Maugham who spent his working life in South East Asia.He said Maugham loved to collect the gossip/scandal of the "white society" much of which were reborn in his short stories and novels.
@chimerat8012this cat could be reciting the alphabet and sound like royalty
@MrRatherinoWas this Toff a pedantically over the top in his comforts ???

@kimsherlock8969Maugham skewers describing people. Interesting to see the inherent misogyny in appraising women. AI hasn't got the inflections yet. Sentences are put down like flat feet and the stresses land on the wrong words. But a great effort, and fun to listen.
@avicennitegh1377Sad
@JungleJoeVNProvocative story
@michekidsOf course this brings you back to "The remains of the day". Blessed he who can find perfection in their work.
