Zendaya as athena!! and Helen of congo!!? No thanks . I'll watch the original instead. This is just blatant disrespect to greek culture.

______

Christopher Nolan’s next film, The Odyssey, is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX® film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX® film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.

Quidquid id est, timeo Danaos et dona ferentes... No problem for me, that there seem to be no greek actors in the movie as far as we know of: A) it's a Movie of a mystic legend, not historic events, B) the Danaeans of the past are certainly not the greeks of now, as are the romans, egyptians, etc.

— @apunktspunktkpunkt4271

The Odyssey stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson and Lupita Nyong’o, with Zendaya and Charlize Theron.

the audacity to even call this abomination "the Odyssey" is ludicrous

— @bjddhi

The Odyssey is produced by Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan for their company, Syncopy. The executive producer is Thomas Hayslip.

The level of effort these people are putting into selling this bastardization is more than just propaganda; it's absolutely disgusting.

0:48 she has zero range as a actor. Zendaya is the same character in every role she plays.

As a Greek who teaches Classical Studies, the hypocrisy surrounding Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is absolutely infuriating.

The production pocketed millions in Greek state subsidies and filmed on our historic lands, yet the cast completely excludes Greek actors. And since the first trailers dropped, I’ve spent countless hours correcting basic, glaring historical errors for my students.

The double standards from this cast are shameless:

Lupita Nyong'o championed authentic African representation for Black Panther, but dismisses the erasure of Greeks by claiming The Odyssey is "just a mythological story."

John Leguizamo boycotted the Mario movie over non-Italian casting, yet has zero issue taking a native Greek role here.

Why are Greek and European stories always treated as "universal blueprints" to be modernized however an American director wants, while fictional, corporate worlds like Wakanda are treated with absolute cultural reverence?

This isn't a "risk" of erasure—it is active cultural erasure happening right now to fuel a specific American political ideology. You cannot chant for diversity and inclusion while colonizing the living heritage of the people you excluded.

If you are tired of Hollywood erasing native cultures while lecturing us about “inclusion” and “representation”, hit like and make your voice heard. We are still here!

Shameful! Boycott the movie!

The teaser gives off medieval vibes rather than Greek. Roman arches and architecture look out of place here. The dreary, overcast sky also misses the mark, lacking the signature bright, warm Mediterranean light

Quando un popolo senza passato distrugge la millenaria storia di un popolo quello greco che creò la civiltà un film che rasenta il ridicolo e che sicuramente non andrò a vedere.Dovrebbe essere impedito a Nolan di titolarlo Odissea

Imagine selling "the actors were on an actual boat" as a feat. The Pirates crew climbed into a real canyon up a mountain in Dominica, in the rain, back in 2006, and didn't make a press tour out of it. Congrats on catching up to twenty years ago.

Greece should ban not only this movie, but also any other films produced by Universal, as well as future projects involving the director, producers, and actors associated with Odyssey. It should also prohibit their entry into Greek territory, including those who actively promote the film.

I do not consider this a matter of freedom of speech when concrete actions are taken to produce a film that falsifies a story and attempts to undermine or damage other people’s culture. At that point, it is no longer merely an expression — it becomes an act with real cultural and social consequences.
