I Moved to Japan With Zero Plan and No Japanese — Here's My Life Now

Video Overview & Insights

Jovany knew nothing about Japan before moving there from New York, US. Now, 3 years later he speaks Japanese and is teaching English and enjoying his best life in Yokohama. In this video, he shows us his $550 studio apartment, talks about the cost of living in Japan, as well as topics like dating, healthcare, and how Japan isn't a perfect utopian dreamworld, but it's where Jovany calls home for now, and for the foreseeable future.

Certainly no Chris Broad video but hey, quite a good video.

All these people saying that Japan summer is so hot, they have no idea what hot means. It's the 2nd of July, in Italy you liretally burn now, in Japan there are 21ºC and it's raining. Stop with this bullshit that Japan is so hot. Japanese people don't know whaty hot means, really. Maybe in August is hot, but now, and it's summer, certainly is not!
And yes, homes here have shitty insulation. Single glass windows are the norm, no floor heating just a hot pump (the air conditioner), often placed in one room, so in the toilet you are gonna freeze, that is why toilet seats are warm.
Different concept than Europe, where the entire house is nice, here it's not. They are still behind, need to catch up. They have forced air ventilation everywhere, but not a real HVAC system like we have in Europe. No heat exchanger here. Primitive air ventilation, so to speak. Probably energy here is cheap, so they can afford to waste a lot. Also, they are in the office most of the time, they always eat outside or buy food from combini, and they get drunk very often.

He left the part about the best part of the health insurance. Medicine is super cheap and you can get help right away.

these are the people you want in your country. they come, they adapt, and they add value. This is the opposite of all the muslim/black immigrants in Europe

how is the bodybuilding community there? NOT A SINGLE youtuber makes a channel here that discusses the best gyms in each country. if i was rich, i would do that. but seriously, what are gyms like over there? i would love to start a community there that focuses on outdoors calisthenics. i would help build a park itself too. especially for training older people...

Japan sounds like the perfect place for me, I hate when people make small talk, I've never had or made friends all the years I've lived in america. It sounds amazing that I can go to a place and people will just leave me the hell alone. if I wanted to socialize id go to a social event, which I never have. Living a serene life in the country where people predominately keep to themselves is something I've always dreamed of.

This is a great opportunity for people who make no money at home, but a big no thank you if you have an established life already.

Japanese society is highly predictable, making it a country where women and vulnerable individuals can change their lives.
Conversely, it's not suitable for men who enjoy a life of taking risks.
High predictability means boredom and spoiledness.

As an obvious foreigner traveling in Japan, I was frequently engaged in small talk by native Japanese. It happens, they're just better about time and place.

Tattoos are not banned in Japan. There is just a social stigma around them...

For anyone seeing this and thinking it's the ideal...

I first came to Japan in 1999 after studying the language and culture for years, and my university degree is in Japanese language and history, and in general I prepared heavily for getting started living here as well as possible and as soon as possible. Respectfully, my lifestyle was originally and still now is MUCH better than the person in this video and someone trying to do it this way.

Everyone is different of course, but if you plan to live here for life, PLEASE put forth more effort first and you will be glad you did! You wouldn't expect to have the same lifestyle in the US as a high school dropout compared to having a law degree, and your expectations of a lifestyle in Japan should match the effort before coming!

yeah, I discovered that one the hard way.

Us Latinos are cooked because Japan only want people born in english speaking countries and they are not interested in learning Spanish.

it's pretty clear Japan just does not want us at all.

An amazing interview. He was so informative. One would definitely have to have his mindset. He exudes confidence. As a Mexican American I'd definitely would have to get him as a tour guide. You can tell he's absorbed the culture.

Americans are super friendly. I remember my first time visiting NYC. I was living in Paris at the time. I couldn't believe how friendly people were in NYC - yes, in NYC...

I bet they make the lesson plans for him. That's why it's easy. Also, I bet the schools are run top notch there, which also helps. I have studied some of the education system in Japan, it's a much much much better system than we have in America.

Loved Japanese culture since I was a kid. Went to Japan in 2025 and loved it. So now I'd like to retire in Japan but that isn't really a thing. But maybe I could buy a place in Japan and work as an English teacher to have spending money.

the brag would be if you move to japan WITHOUT TEACHING ENGLISH

@busetgadapet

Thanks for sharing! I have always been wanting to teach in japan. I am native-level in English, N2 in Japanese and Native Bahasa Indonesia. I have been teaching English and Japanese for both locals and expatriates in Indonesia for about 20 years, Offline and Online, but now would really like to expand my horizon by teaching languages abroad. Any chance that you or other audiences could inform who to contact in Japan to get the real opportunity! Thank you everyone and have good weekend ... :)

Still in the honeymoon phase. 可愛い。Reminds me of myself in 1993 when you could actually have a decent life for ¥250,000 per month and wear a jimbei. Btw, Yokohama is not cold compared to NYC.

I left Japan when I was 14. If I had known at 20 I could come back and teach English I would have loved that opportunity. Bravo to him for taking the opportunity that is going to most definitely change his life the more he learns.

Working as a teacher for kids or a tour guide is typical—those are basically the only jobs available for foreigners. But the reality of the actual corporate world there is very different, my friend. Moving to Japan as a professional is a terrible career choice. Long hours, karoshi, high suicide rates... people just aren't happy. It's a beautiful country for a vacation, but the reality is that living there full-time sucks."
