How To Get The Most Out of A Book - Analytical Reading 101

Video Overview & Insights

For more reading tips + weekly insights, subscribe to my newsletter: A Mug of Insights here:

Ive read books before but they've all been easy to read like 1984 and fahrenheit 451 but now I'm getting into philosophies such as Albert Camus' and Friedrich Nietzsche and I can't understand anything lol so now I'm going to start reading while taking notes. I'm not doing this for school but just as a hobby. Im loving all the philosophies that stem from an indifferent universe

What is "notion"? I started using onenote because I wanted a writing app that is backed up by a cloud and accessible on my laptop (+ for free) and it worked wonders! But: something happened, maybe an automatic update or so, and now it has become outragingliy slow and buggy. That is a not so small catastrophe for me because I heavily rely on it as people here will understand. I'm open for suggestions 😿

More User Perspectives

Sadly, most non-fiction books I read are borrowed from university and I don't think I can write in those.

I personally avoid marking books.
Not because it damages the pages, but because our understanding changes with time.
The same book can speak differently to us at different stages of life. A book read in childhood feels completely different when read again as an adult.
Sometimes leaving the pages untouched allows the book to reveal new meanings each time we return to it.

I know this is probably a stupid question, that is put in the wrong place.. But I wonder what's a 'seminar'?
I tried googling it up but didn't get anything that makes sense in the context of a book

Peterson says to not do any of this. That it's all a distraction and prevents you from absorbing what is in the book

I finally tried marking in my books on a few recent reads and have found it very engaging and enjoyable. I'm not even doing anything too advanced, just using a pencil to underline things that really stick out (or using brackets for longer ones), and a few notes in margins

Absolutely hated doing this in school but it helps to digest complex literature so much.

Wow the way you approach books is great, totally like a project. Not just reading.

@fernandogarcia7170
@

What are you using to tab your pages? It looks like it wraps around the page rather than sticking out. I like that.

I’m currently reading a book signed by President Lyndon Johnson that I paid almost $450 for. Sorry but I have to make an exception to the marking strategy

@ahsmithkg
@

How am I supposed to read how to read a book if I can’t read a book? Do you see the problem with that

@WilliamRedwine
@

If you want to make a book your own, at least have the decency of not selling that book again and even if you do, don't hide this fact to the person you are selling it to. I purchase an used book, asked for pictures and the seller both lied and omitted things from the book, so when I got it I was super disappointed because if I knew I was getting a book marked, I wouldn't have bought it.

@LuizFelipe-lk1hs

Wow, wow! You explained everything so well and simply. I understood every point very clearly as a 12th grader who wants to start a journey with non-fiction and philosophy books.

Step 1 : failed. I can’t write on my books. Even if you pay me 1 million dollar to write on one page, I swear keep your money it will NOT happen, my pretty page will stay immaculate

Would love it if you are able to share how you created your system on Notion. I'm very visual and I'm sure it can help others as well!

@CuriousandCultured
@

Do you have codes or symbols plus a colour code to maintain a system for your marginalia?

@VaughanMcCue
@

1. make it your own ( talk with author )
2. inspection ( anchor yourself with tabs with 3 main point) + read the whole chapter in one look before re-reading it
3. summery ( in the book + don't use quote )
4. Archiving ( you need a system for notes )
