Lots of good stuff. Auteur is the effect of having a finished film that feels like it came from one person. The film can therefore connect with the viewer with a familiar and intimate feeling. Auteur, french for 'author', became a popular term during the marketing of films in the late 1950s. It highlighted the idea that "400 Blows" and "Breathless" were not the product of the committees than ran the dying studios. The connotation of one mind in auteur is key. How that more intimate feel and effect is actually achieved is not the point of the term. Auteur put directors above the title, where actors had been for decades.

Art is not subjective, your tastes are subjective but the quality of art is actually mostly objective. It is objectively true that "2001 a space odyssey" is a better movie then "Jack and Jill". That being said you may not personally like 2001 a space odyssey and you might get some type of entertainment out of jack and Jill. That is your personal tastes but it does not change the objective reality that space odyssey is a better movie. I don't understand why people struggle with this concept. The only thing I can think of is that many people are so self absorbed that they have to believe that there own subjective opinion is the only thing in the world and there is no objective reality independent of your feelings. You are not the center of the universe and there are things that do not a line with your personal tastes.

I feel like your approach to film analysis (atleast in this video) is very american and hollywood influenced. How would you analyze a film like Mirror by Andrey Tarkovsky which has no meaning, no message, and barely a plot? And yet its considered one of the greatest films of all time. A lot of filmmakers treat films as moving paintings, not so much as a recorded version of a theatrical play.

@NateRiver-d7qReally loved this video, thank you for making it. I've watched Home Alone probably a hundred times since I was a little kid, and I've always had thoughts about it and the decisions it makes. I've always thought the first Harry Potter and Home Alone share a lot of DNA via Columbus and Williams, but I didn't have the vocabulary to get into the brass tacks of why, even though I wanted to figure it out.
There's a lot of value in using a mainstream movie to introduce analytical tools. It makes it feel very accessible. Something like Home Alone is a movie that makes covers sappy emotions, funny emotions, and kinda scary emotions. Even if you didn't understand why you felt these things, it has to use a wide variety of techniques to succeed at expressing them, and this breakdown makes it feel so clear in retrospect.
You think, "Maybe I could start to understand films better, even if I'm not in school. I should look more into the terminology covered here, as well."
I have lots of feelings when I watch movies and I want to understand why I have them, so I can better appreciate pieces of art and find more cinematic art I love.

@morgantrias3103The idea that some random test audience was ever going to understand, let alone accept, Aronofsky's Mother! is laughable. At this point, the average American has probably never even seen a film made by and for adults. And after the widespread idiotic reaction to 28 Years later ("It wasn't horror-y enough!") I assume that most people think of horror films as a non-stop series of video game kills punctuated by a jump scare every ten seconds; no dialogue whatsoever.
