Not sure if it's something you guys would be into but they are a Canadian icon and this is something of farewell tour. It's the last time they will perform on Vancouver Island before the aircraft are retired this fall after more than 50 years.

Born and raised in Victoria. Welcome! Everyone is different some are lovely and some are not. I am now an expat having moved to Europe as my husband is Dutch, so my piece of advice is take it day by day, explore, and embrace the differences. And ps I always shop at Thrifty’s or Country Grocers when I come home to visit

Welcome Jen, John and the kids! I lived in Victoria back in the mid-70s working for Monday magazine on Government Street. There wasn't even half a million people back then. If you want to take am interesting family selfie to send, go to the park at the very southern tip of the city where you will find mile Zero of the Tran-Canada Highway. Not often you get to live at the start of a main highway.
So glad you are all here at last and you are all going to make great Canadians, I know.

Save On Foods is great for 1.49 day, once a month on Tuesday. In berry season, Thrifty Foods and Save On Foods have friendly competition.

What is the deal with every foreigner being into Canadian Tire? 😊 What a bizarre store to focus on. Also Walmart is not a grocery store.

The Market Garden is extremely boutique. Fabulous though. The woman who owns it also took over the largest department store section of the shopping center downtown on Douglas. Very fun. Thriftys is local to the island, great store. Good for meat. Save On is also fantastic. Produce best selection and quality (tons of local suppliers which Thriftys also does but Save On is better prices on). Farmers markets definitely. Go to Whole Foods in Uptown. Not sure if you guys have that type in the US. But owned by Amazon so...

Also, pro tip, the stuff at Market Garden is also available (albeit not styled) in Fernwood at the cute tiny grocer. If your close 😊

Honestly, when someone gives you a coffee on the house they generally don't really expect it back, you shouldn't feel obliged to pay extra. It's just part of community building, now you know the coffee spot is friendly and you'll return! Best thing you can do is treat people around you the way the guy who comped you a coffee did, makes the whole community a better, friendlier place with less friction!

I hate to say this but you are not a typical American, sorry about the lady in the coffee shop and right now lots of us have a terrible outlook on us citizens, you will fit right in, welcome to Canada!

yeah, as a Canadian, I forget how weird it is, that if I'm looking for a small appliance like a coffee maker, my first 2 stops are London Drugs, and Canadian Tire. Neither lead with that purchase in their name!

I live in Montreal; I have never heard of any of those grocery stores (other than Walmart)...unless they are called something else here. The big grocery stores here are Metro, IGA, SuperC and Maxi (with other's like Adonis and PA in the mix...). Here we have a recycling bin, a compost bin and regular trash pick up; so 3 different ways to get rid of waste. We also have storefronts where you go to bring your bottles/cans (that's a fairly new thing...you used to return them in grocery stores). Non traditional clothing....same in Montreal: I'll admit I'll stare sometimes or think it's not flattering or wtv but on the flip side I'll also think "love the confidence!".

stay away from save on foods here in canada because their not the best and there the more expensive for same products as other grocery stores

Yes, it is different in different regions. You will have to visit other parts of Canada as you go forward. Toronto. Montreal. Ottawa. Quebec City. The Maritimes. Etc. Each city/region has it's own flavor.

Jenn first of all welcome home now I think I have commented before I am of Haudenosaunee decent registered under Bill c31 great grand parent now I just want to comment on garbage composting now I know where I live in Ontario we have 2 bins one small one plus the curbside one just a quick not you need to at least wash the small kitchen bin and keep the curbside one either out doors or in garage shed etc. they will get stinky over time so try to wash the small indoor one or use the compost bags etc. for that one

Set it to the stores in your area. It will show you the weekly sales and you can tap on the item in the ad and it will add it to your list. You can also type in items you need that are not on sale. It's really convenient.

Welcome to Victoria. Try out red barn market for local produce.
Thrifty foods used to be a local family owned business and it was great, but now it’s owned by sobey’s a national chain and it’s not as good .. it’s good ,but not the same quality. Save-on is comparable. Owned by a nonagenarian millionaire, jimmy pattison.

Once you get settled, check out the farm markets like Silver Rill, or Dan’s market on central Saanich road. There are lots more out on the Saanich peninsula that you will find as you explore.
