Every WORST Designed City Explained in 9 Minutes

Video Overview & Insights

Have you ever walked through a city and thought, "Who on earth designed this mess?" Or wondered why some places seem perfectly engineered for traffic jams and misery? These aren't accidents. In this video, as a real urban planner, i'm explaining the disastrous planning decisions behind the world's worst designed cities. From desert cities that shouldn't exist to capitals that forgot about people, these are real world examples of what happens when urban planning goes terribly wrong..

Part 2 >>> https://youtu.be/dOhF3cvL5Yg

— @UrbanPlannerExplained

#urbanplanning #citydesign #explained

Dubai: The city with the world's tallest building but forgot to build sidewalks.

Yes, Vancouver made good choices.

— @B_Man05

Houston: The city with no zoning, 26-lane highways, and and has become a concrete wasteland.

Perth: A giant parking lot with a beach, where suburban sprawl makes Phoenix jealous.

For immigrants, somehow Calgary lands consistently on top 10 most live-worthy cities of the world

— @koish7039

Brasília: The city of the future, shaped like an airplane, that forgot to include humans.

Brussels: The capital of Europe, run by 19 uncoordinated municipalities, resulting in permanent chaos.

Your pronunciation of French names is atrocious.

— @glotzu

Calgary: A city of office towers connected by hamster tubes, where everyone is assumed to drive a pickup truck.

Beijing: Home to the "concentric circles of traffic hell," with six ring roads all gridlocked at once.

You should add intros to your videos. It seems incomplete when you start explaining within the first two seconds

— @mememan_iscool

Phoenix: The desert city that uses more water than Seattle where being a pedestrian is considered an extreme sport.

Which city do you think is the biggest planning disaster? Is there a city I missed that deserves a spot on this list? Let me know in the comments below!

You think Calgary was designed? 😂😂😂😂

Calgary is car-centric. However, new master planned communities come with their light commercial and schools with the community within a mile.

tell me you've never been to dubai without saying so directly. Saying stuff like "there is no sidewalks in downtown dubai near the burj khalifa" is the dumbest thing I've ever seen, reddit moderator type of point of view of the world. Jealous af.
I was also laughing when you complain about "no grocery stores at walk level in marina". MY GUY, we order groceries home using Talabat Zomato or Careem. We don't move a finger and we have our groceries in 20 minutes at home, nobody goes to buy their groceries physically. Not even 1% of what you said is real, let alone you're displaying a tremendous amount of stupidity making the statements you make which are ALL utterly false and low IQ behavior. Immature af.

Welcome to Urban Planner Explained!

I'm Umut, an urban planner currently pursuing my Master's degree. I'm passionate about decoding the complex world of cities, and I'm here to break down everything I've learned—from university lectures to my travels—into clear videos. My goal is to make the often technical subject of urban planning engaging and easy to understand for everyone.

"No zoning laws in Houston", "Car Centered"
Here's the solution:
>Start an ice cream store, become rich
>Build yourself your own Palace of the Parliament wherever you like
>No power? Build a coal power plant right next to it!
>No drainage? Build a moat surrounding your new land!
>Insane traffic? Simple. Build yourself underground tunnels complete with conveyors leading to and from every place you like: the store, your workplace, the dentist etc. Just lay down and enjoy the ride.

Why doesn't everyone do this? Are they stupid?

— @SerenityTheMimic

On this channel, we explain various topics like city models, principles of urbanism, some insanely-well designed cities, and American suburbs in a simple and clear way. Of course, topics like Megacity projects, future city models, street patterns, smart cities, walkability, urban design, zoning, public transportation and urban planners are also in our area of interest.

If you want to better understand your environment, join a conscious conversation about cities, and explore these living organisms with me, you're in the right place.

Complains that Dubai isn't walkable, then explains why people don't walk in Dubai (because it gets to 122 degrees F). Complains that there is too much air conditioning in Dubai after complaining that it gets to 122 degrees F. I grew up in the Southeast US. We have air conditioning for a reason. This is really starting to feel like satire.

Being from Phoenix I’d say he’s spot on. I dream of the day I can evacuate this souless wasteland.

Most people in Phoenix don’t have grass lawns at all. He quotes the summer temperatures, not the year round averages which draws in all the snowbirds and “Phoenix” in the popular imagination is actually several different towns and cities that have merged into each other , Fountain Hills, Cave Creek Paradise Valley and Scottsdale to the north, Tempe, Phoenix, and Mesa at the center, and the cardinals rural area to the south, there are more like Queen Creek as well. The reason why Phoenix has become more populous is because everyone is fleeing blue states, AND get this, it has much more water than most people think, having the rio verde, Tempe town lake, Saguaro Lake, Lake Roosevelt, the Hayden Rhodes Aqueduct and the central Arizona canal projects.

@GDK_REESE

no offense im from canada and shoveling your own yard theres nothing wrong with it seriously your wasting your money if your paying the city to shovel your yard

I moved out of Phoenix. It was so chill, and relaxed in the 90s. Now, it's a hellscape. You'd think that the traffic alone would keep people from moving there, but nope!

I still visit often to see family and friends, but I'd never live there again I don't think.

3:25 Brasilia was not built to house civilians; the idea was for it to serve exclusively as a political capital, so it makes sense that it plays that role. The civilians who live in the favelas have invaded the city and shouldn't be there, since Brasilia was built solely for political activities.

The problem is exactly that: designed cities. A city should not be designed. It should grow naturally.

All I'm going to say is that Perth CBD is a ghost town between 6 and 9 PM because there is pretty much nothing there during the day that justifies the headache of finding parking that still ends up costing 10AUD an hour.
