Elton John - Oceans Away (Official Lyric Video)
Video Overview & Insights
'Oceans Away' is taken from the brand new Elton John album, The Diving Board. The record also includes the tracks 'Home Again' and 'Mexican Vacation (Kids In The Candlelight)'.
I always play this song on Memorial Day. It reminds me of my father and his VFW and American Legion buddies selling poppies and honoring their fallen comrades. It’s a beautiful song. As song writers Elton John and Bernie Taupin never fail to amaze me.

This is like seriously one of the best songs Elton has ever written. It is so powerful. It is so beautiful. You feel it when you play it - those chords just penetrate the heart and the emotions follow. What a bloody legend and what a great partnership with Bernie who writes such incredible lyrics that inspire Elton to make magic.

@jimmykarlsson2567This song is a wonderful tribute to those of the Greatest Generation. This song touched my heart so much, I had the song played at my father's funeral at the grave site as a beautiful and memorable way to grieve his life and say goodbye.

Are the lyrics in Elton's songs in his new albums still written by Bernie Taupin? Anyone? Thanks!
Pretty song but I have no idea what it means.

@andrewvaalburg1731Oceans Away
Elton John
I hung out with the old folks
In the hope that I'd get wise
I was trying to bridge the gap
Between the great divide
Hung on every recollection
In the theater of their eyes
Picking up on this and that
In the few that still survived
Call 'em up, n' dust 'em off, let 'em shine
The ones who hold onto the the ones
They had to leave behind
Those that flew and those that fell
The ones that had to stay
Beneath a little wooden cross oceans away
They bend like trees in winter
These shuffling old grey lions
Those snow-white stars still gather
Like the belt around Orion
Just to touch the faded lightning
Of their powerful design
Of a generation gathering
For maybe the last time
Call 'em up, n' dust 'em off, let 'em shine
The ones who hold onto the ones
They had to leave behind
Those that flew and those that fell
The ones that had to stay
Beneath a little wooden cross oceans away
Oceans away, where the green grass sways
And the cool wind blows
Across the shadow of their graves.
Shoulder to shoulder back in the day
Sleeping bones to rest in earth, oceans away, oceans away
Call 'em up, n' dust 'em off, let 'em shine
The ones who hold onto the ones
They had to leave behind
Those that flew and those that fell
The ones that had to stay
Beneath a little wooden cross oceans away

Today marks the 75th anniversary of D-Day (June 6, 1944) where Canadian, American, French and English allied forces came together as one shoulder to shoulder against the Germans on the beaches of Normandie (France). This became a crucial moment in history of the Second World War. Elton and Bernie wrote this poignant and heartfelt song to honor those who couldn't come back to their families because of the ultimate sacrifice and now rest in peace under little wooden crosses, oceans away.
