How to Read Better
Video Overview & Insights
Many people want to become better readers — but they don't know where to start. I share my thoughts on how we can improve our reading, including some practical tips.
I wonder if you can listen to a book first, which is usually faster since you are not making much notes while listening and then read it slowly, paying attention etc. Though it depends on volume of the book, If it's 15 hours i can imagine re-reading it after but if it's 40 hours... Nah
This isn't about tricks or life hacks. Instead, I hope we can focus on building quality habits, developing a life of the mind, and treating the great books as they deserve to be treated.

Read a book twice?...it takes me 6 months or more to read a book!
@johnhunter-r2rDont judge but i wana read weird books like mein kamof idk why but i wana read more but i cant and no im not neo nazi
@djolepro934010:05 Suprisingly picking the right books has helped me read a lot. Im in highschool and ive tried a multitude of books (romance, thriller, horror, etc) but the ONLY ONES I genuinely enjoyed were nonfiction history/selfhelp books. I never really was into fictional books. Reading 1001 facts about african american history by jeffery stewart right now.
@kakkyfigglehornI've heard this over and over again for years about whole language. My husband was a whole language reading teacher. But as how many teachers should know you do not use just one method of teaching to make the child 's reading foundation whole . There is spelling,
@marylawrence8784I’m just here because i just realized I don’t know how to read well😅
@KrayKray657Can you talk more about STEM manuscript reading? It’s almost the only type of reading I have to do anymore, and it’s just so challenging to me with all of the mutant and plasmid naming that you have to keep up with through every sentence or fig description. I’m 32, so I wasn’t exactly a tablet baby or anything
@danielstarr903711:43 Marx mentioned before Hobbes?
@danielstarr9037Look up, speed reading, skimming,scanning, nonlinear notetaking, , non linear reading, mindmapping(justin sung icanstudy) =. If you want information extraction.
@denizenhugger99377:00 On note taking
@shubhdixit520i just started reading again. i finished my first book in 10 years. the giver by lois lowry. highly recommend it for those starting to read again. i just bought 4 more books (all secondhand) and i'm so excited! 😊
@nope-k2fI recently read the book called 48 laws of power by Robert Greene and loved it
@Dont_Touchme1I suddenly began reading again. I used to be a voracious reader as a child and lost any love for fiction along the way. Then I realized I hated scrolling instagram all day and my brother gave me a fun murder mystery to read. It was so interesting (and short) I completed it in a night. Then I wanted more, so I got another book by that author and completed it. Then I went through my books and found crime and punishment and read that. It was so beautiful!
Now I just trust that a book (a classic or one recommended by a friend or family member) will be fun, even if there are parts that feel like they drone on there’s something to enjoy. So now I am switching away to read some scifi! I’m currently reading A Canticle for Leibowitz.
I had three strokes in the past and I’m having complication of reading of Longbrook I’m trying to learn proof in my reading, but I missed a lot of school of my health I want to know what’s the step to get to be a better reading
@razazdieu7301I agree that a book - so called a book should be sort of challenging or tough to your current intellectual capacity and you need some effort to tackle it. Otherwise, don't buy and read a book, just go and watch TV instead.
@philwang7194Best! Best content ever. Thanks Jared. You are superb!
@philwang71941:56 reading is like exercise (takes practice to become better, start slowly and eventually your 'reading stamina' will increase)
4:18 read books more than once (to get much out of them and understand the author better)
7:22 take notes consciously (not everything is really important)
10:06 pick the right books (stablish a narrative to your journey, a good reason, based on a topic like politics, an author like Dostoevsky, or a specific sub-genre like afro futurism). Think about what you want to read, craft a plan. What you read is what kind of person you want to be
14:13 get the habit of always carrying a book with you (for example before bed)
Locke, Smith, Marx, John Rawls, Martha Nussbaum, Confucius, Thomas Hobbes
I’m really happy that I find your channel,thanks for your amazing videos 🙏🏻💘
@OvceannHello Jared, I really like this video and find it extremely useful. I agree with all of your suggestions and ideas, it’s amazing how I ve been doing mostly all what you have explained could be helpful to become better readers. I’m about to start reading “The body keeps the score” for a second time and I will follow your advice to go slower so I can really absorbe the content and be able to remember better the parts of the book that I find precious. My reason to read is to learn more about human behavior starting with the way the brain and mind work to understand better the process to be able to apply that knowledge in my own life to better myself and improve the way I think and behave and help others as well to live better and happier lives. Thank you for your videos and I hope you are still posting more in the present. 🎉
@jessie260I simply can't read anymore. Fairly confident that the internet caused this.
@Chinga-Tu-MAGA" I will destroy the wisdom of the wise.
And the cleverness of the clever I will set aside."
Where is the wise man?
Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?
For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God. 1st Corinthians 1:19-21
10:05 the third point
@RafaelTito-g6dThank you, I think I've been doing it kind of wrong for these past months
@GiuseppePapaleo-i9oI keep a steady balance between fiction and nonfiction. Between all my recommendations, I use the lighter fare to balance out the tough stuff. I've finished three books in the time I read two chapters of "Pedagogy of the Oppressed."
Pulp is a great way to read at volume and enjoy the process.
Subject is books and we talking about practice.
Not reading. Practice.
I stop read. Many year ago. What do ?
@3themagicnumberinsted of english i read. i read Filipino my worst nightmare 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
@SofiaJocsonYou like John Lennon
@br0cksariHere's an easy tip for reading better: When I read, I look up every word I don't know, even if it looks familiar, and write the definition above the word or in the margin. You can't understand the author's intent if you don't understand their diction (word choice).
@GwatchumI never thought of reading twice could’ve big changes. Thanks
@AthanCardinalSupportive rhythm and practical cues invite participation at a comfortable pace I create comparable mini-practice videos and would really appreciate any suggestions to help me grow.
@PhraseLiftI like reading the Bible.
@thegreatestpuzzleeverThank You for your valuable Insights
@waleed.junaidyI used to get stuck in bad books. My mind will usually scream at me: THIS BOOK IS SHITE! THIS PARAGRAPH DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE! IT IS CONTRADICTORY! And I would stick to the suffering of a book I didn't like or was simply bad. These days, I just drop anything that goes against my core reading values.
@fall1152I listen to you to improve my listening skill , i love your accent and voice
@foxxxxyyyxSuperb guidance, Jared.
So grateful.
Excellent topic. I am sure you have good tips and tips. But, I had hard time understating your point of view for all viewers. what you were telling What tips do you want all viewers to achieve out of your program?
@MahadHiradLately I’ve been on my phone and computer way more than I’d like. Over the past few months I decided to pick up reading again, and at first it was tough — but the more I read, the more I want to read. Thinking of books as “my Netflix shows” has made a huge difference.
@ezrra.98Do y’all feel that audiobooks and reading are created equal? Can you get as much from an audiobook? They’re different I feel. Just a little.
@kelseyjoiner5387I would really like to get your insights into deeply technical reading like for people in STEM fields, I do the same thing having to read deeply technical concepts sometimes 4-5 times to get a deep grasp of them.
@TechBroGod1337probably only 2 of the 15 minutes of this video are helpful. the rest feels like grandstanding
we get it bro you can list 17 classic political authors how the fuck do i read

@Daniel-z5l8jJohn Rawls's misconception of fairness is hilarious. Nothing about John Rawls and thinkers like him indicates greatness. They all appeal to the same fallacious argumentation—namely, equivocation and inconsistency. Unsubscribed.
@MarkelBeverleyHow come reading a book be painful?
