Did Mamdani just reshape the Democratic Party? | You Decide

Video Overview & Insights

Steve Kornacki is the chief data analyst at NBC News and a familiar face to anyone who watches election night coverage. He joined Errol to discuss this week’s surprising New York Democratic primary, where multiple Democratic Socialist candidates backed by Mayor Mamdani won, including Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier, while several incumbents suffered unexpected defeats. Kornacki also explained his “Kornacki Cam” livestream, which tracks election results in real time, and broke down the night’s biggest surprises, particularly Chevalier’s victory, which significantly outperformed expectations.

You clowns. Those "international isses and or genocide" is being perpetrated with our tax dollaes. We are directly responsible for that. So why would I trust someone who supports using my tax dollars to commit genocide in Gaza to help the homeless kids in NYC? It's a basic signal and litmus test on the politicians humanity.

homelessness is a product of income and wealth inequality, Erroll. You won’t fix that issue without taxing the rich, so if you’re so concerned about it, maybe you should join DSA

As a young progressive, the fact that anyone over 50 treats socialism like the boogeyman is astounding. How can the interviewer say we need to help take care of the 28,000 children sleeping in shelters and think that the centrist democrats are going to do anything, especially compared to the DSA? Are these services going to be provided by private industry with no incentive?

I like how Errol just ignored Kornacki saying DSA made inroads with black communities (especially younger black people) because that didn’t fit his narrative

Yeah but the DSA didn’t really go after Ritchie Torres. Not yet at least.

Black people was getting gentrified for so many years and you didn't see more black people bcoz you were not paying attention when their deed was taken.
Now you care about it.

This guy has so much experience and care for local politics that he can’t understand how a country that funds and enables a holocaust wouldn’t give two shits about people living on its streets.

I suspected Errol would be frustrating when covering this. The comments have helped me turn it off before I wasted my time. Too bad the blip of popularity this show had with me when Errol was interviewing Mamdani 's admin and actually educating me, is now swiftly dwindling. So tired of establishment media.

@ElGil-sn8gh

Errol, people are saying we want more money for homeless children in New York and less on bombs killing children in Gaza and Lebanon.

@samotheba
@

Darializa's slogan was babies not bombs. Ie no money for bombs in Palestine & lets invest in iradicating childhood poverty in NY. Errol is being deliberately obtuse & disengenious. These are politicians being elected to the national assembly & you want them to ignore billions the federal government is spending on a Genocide abroad??

I’m black and a home owner. I don’t buy the boogeyman nonsense about DSA. My millennial children are struggling due to late stage capitalism. The propaganda from corporate Dems nor MAGA will work in 2028. If they put up a DSA candidate, I’m voting for them!

@Wanda_M_DS9
@

This discussion of the wins by the DSA are just so deeply biased and right wing and just narrow minded and wrong. Every take is worse than the next to invent BS reasons to discredit DSA candidates.

I was sad to see Chevalier win in my district. I hope someone qualified and honorable challenges her.

It’s Zohran’s party now

@leebone1
@

This conversation was intentionally dishonest, this guy is clearly an IsNotreal shill that wants to act as if he doesn't get why everyone in the DSA ran against IsNotreal First.

It's not because homeless kids is not a priority, it's because the politicians can actually help more homeless people in NY by voting against 10 million per day of our tax dollars being sent to Bibi to kill kids in Gaza.

Democrats simply have no understanding of what they have unleashed by letting the socialists take control of their party.

The whole angle at 23:10 is so disingenuous Errol, especially when Darializa literally advocated for "Babies not bombs." The money we spend to assist Israel's genocide, alongside all of the money we use to wage war across the world SHOULD BE SPENT ON OUR CHILDREN HERE!!! That's focusing on homeless kids in our district. That's focusing on kids who are facing food insecurity. Espaillat has talked a big game but has delivered very little, all while voting for bombs, aid to Israel, and ICE. I beg you to actually analyze these folks as legit politicians. They have all explained how taking money away from genocide and death can and should be used to improve people's lives by increasing social spending on a myriad of specific policies. This is literally the job of a legislator, they control the purse!

@red_guardian

The confusion over Gaza becoming a litmus test is adorably out of touch. For decades, pointing out that Israel is an apartheid state was disqualifying for public office! Now that public opinion is starting to shift, allowing for the latent criticisms which were always there to be honestly voiced by candidates, it is a liability for progressives not to voice them. It's not complicated.

Also, none of these candidates ran primarily on this issue, and most DID center housing affordability. There pundits have some solid analyses, but they just do not really don't get this one.

@quichenovel
@

The reason Palestine is a litmus test is because everyone woke up and found out that swearing loyalty to AIPAC and visiting Israel was more important than caring about your own local community

20:11 Errol, these individuals, businesses and PACs are not giving politicians money because they feel charitable. They want something in return (even if it is not a direct quid pro quo). It matters intensely how political campaigns are funded, because politicians answer to those who fund their campaigns. People in the mainstream press not giving two hoots about this is why independent media has become so prominent: normal people understand this relationship, people in the media are at best wilfully ignorant of it.

@disasterarea96

@Richard.Atkinson

This was a referendum on Israel... We don't want to be complicit in a genocide. We are tired of corporate politicians being bought and using our tax dollars against us.

@aria2628-m2t
@

you don't see a connection between kids in Gaza and homeless kids in NY?

Billions going to Israel to kill in Gaza, Lebanon, couldn't be used to help homeless kids in NY?

@animenhearhear
@

They bemoan the fact that voters are paying attention. And to separate the situation on Gaza from American homelessness is incredibly myopic. Is it on purpose or does he really fail to see how those things are interrelated? And if he is so concerned about homeless kids, why didn't he start doing something sooner?

@pandorafox3944
@

There is a HUGE difference between the homeless children in NYC and Gaza. In Gaza, they are killed in a genocide. I am shocked you are comparing the two. It's night & day man...

@RobertLee-g8v

It needed to be mentioned that Espaillats weaponization of anti Black/anti Haitian racism to Darializa probably soured him for a lot of crucial voters in the final stretch

13 is my district, and actually, Mamdani swept in my particular neighborhood (Inwood). Also: there are many 'white, college-educated' residents here who've been here for decades - to call us 'newcomers' is erroneous. This neighborhood has gone through many waves of dominant demographics. I work next-door to Columbia - district 12 - and Espaillat had signs up down there! AND had people removing Darializa signs in his own district, like a desperate child. All my neighborhood friends - including many Dominicans and other Hispanics, voted for Darlializa. Espaillat has been a filet-of-corporate Dem establishment lackey from the beginning. No, thank you. APART from the massive Israel Lobby funding. PS: I'm Jewish and have lived in Israel -- and 90% of my Jewish friends also voted for him.

@jammyd5394

Errol pretending not to know why DSA are against isreal and aipac. U can’t talk abt homeless people in ur district bcoz 99.9% of politicians on both side are in the pockets of isreal and aipac and wants to give billions of dollar to them every year.

@jammyd5394
@

re: genocide - more and more voters can NOT abide so everyone has to take a position. Re: homeless kids in NYC, that's kinda like climate change - just NOT talked about by most media - maybe Kornacki can mention both - popular media figures could help in both cases.

It’s disgusting they believe the incumbent is entitled. Don’t do your job, get replaced. These “leaders” forgot they work for The People.
