Identity theft: How criminals use a low-interest credit card scam to steal from you (Marketplace)
Video Overview & Insights
It starts with what sounds like a promising phone call: For a one-time fee, you can lower the interest rate on your credit card. But the person on the other end of the line isn't with your bank or credit card company — and what that person is really after is your identity.
6 years later, Canada still doesn’t have credit freezing except in Quebec….
We obtain a database of names of people who have had their identities stolen through this scam, and inform them about the breach. And we talk to experts and a former fraudster who tell us how you can protect your personal information, including testing whether Equifax and TransUnion are doing enough to protect you.

These darknet sellers are being oddly candid about their work (and the text does not sound like the sort of thing ruthless criminals would say). Can't help but wonder if CBC made those conversations up.

I been a victim of identity theft from my checking account My Jeffrey Parker
@jeffreyparker2054Typical politician don’t have answers for you at this point and by the way, how did you track me down? I serve the public I don’t serve the CBC which by the way is public. This is the way our government works. Are they really working for you? wow you’ll be the judge He may have told you what they’d like to do, but what will they really do?
@bernl178And believe me at what credit cards charge interest the banks don’t care the money is so good you can write off $1 billion and still give the finger to the public because well you’re the bank and you can do that. It’s like 6% of that 18% covers all the fraud and they don’t care it’s a cash cow. It’s all about doing the math. Risk versus reward. The banks know this very well so does visa and at the end of the day you’re a victim either way.
@bernl178I got a call once like that apparently my name is Richard Nixon and I live at 1900 Pennsylvania Ave. it took this caller from India about 25 minutes to figure it out as they know nothing about US politics. Then he proceeded to tell me bad things about my mother, and that it was very hot in India. I love America
@bernl178Why the fewer credit cards you have the better, I just got one of mine hacked ( I only had 3 two of them are bank cards). The none bank card was hacked but it took me nearly an hour on the phone to cancel the card (which I had only used sporadically in some years). The frustrating part was they kept trying to sell me a new account, they were totally uninterested in me just canceling the card. I simply told them to bugger off and I would not be paying the fraudulent charges.
@laurachristianson1688It's not difficult. If anyone calls and you don't know them or the number don't answer!
@JanieLedeboerI have lifelock, and my credit is frozen.
@rickynorris1694After the encounter with you I can’t be less grateful for the help you’ve generously spent on me I’m thankful #AUTICSTECH*
@MariamDolcettoAfter the encounter with you I can’t be less grateful for the help you’ve generously spent on me I’m thankful #AUTICSTECH*
@MariamDolcettoDon't answer your phone unless the number comes up as someone you know. Anyone who wants to get ahold of you can leave a message, and you can return the call.
If scammers can't reach you directly by phone, it's one less way they can defraud you.
I hope they had a cpn when signing up for those cards 😂😅 & not under they personal

@hansmatthewnierves3168Contact your bank and credit card company directly and they will ask security questions. Do not ever give any information to any person who calls you directly.
@baqirhemraj7639One should only deal with well-reputable trusted banks. Don't ever be tempted by an offer. First, check the credential before dealing.

@LadyZ07How can I get a card ?
@marcia.mcnicol9534Maybe a better idea is take away the power from the banks to come after you for payment. They are the ones who failed to do due diligence in insuring these person applying for credit really was the name on the account. The banks are making the mistakes, hold the banks accountable. Credit is too easy to come by.
@DaveinetAnd now all these people have their faces on Youtube. The scammers now can associate the face with the name.
@DaveinetNever give your info to any person that don't speaks English and like stuff.
@eltinygarcia7358Can you do an investigation on Transferwise and Revolut? Thank you!

@monique.thenurse55Identity theft is a very personal crime, regardless what these thieves say. Just like in the Old West the solution to this type of crime can be found at the end of a rope.
@BicentennialBaby1976I never fall for scams because I never answer my phone.
