I just dont understand art, is art best if its more realistic or is it best if its more abstract and you need to explaine what it is about, What makes real art, when I go to an art gallery I see all the old paintings almost realistic, then you go to modern and you see the semi abstract like vangough with lines creating energy or something. What makes art special just dont understand what sort of art I aught to do any recommendations that may direct me in right direction, Then Hockney seemed to just create from an Ipad is that art not even watercolor or oil or acrylic, is using a any material art, so confusing, what is the most uptodate type of art, so confused, any ideas what I aught to focus on to create great art please.

No matter how you try to characterize these people as geniuses, they will never truly capture the Public's acclaim. But the art sellers will capture a lot of money from wealthy people trying to show their friends how erudite they are. Simple questions: If you could have any original from any of the 20 on this list, or a Monet, which would you take? Any of the 20, or Vermeer? Choose. One of your 20, or Raphael? Pick. One of your 20, or Eakins? Or Homer? Or Van Gogh? One of these, or Ed Hopper? Albert Bierstadt? Rubens? Renoir? Wyeth? Trust me, I could go on and on and on.

Nicole Eisenman - 9 - connects and feels very human
Julie Mehretu - 10 - probably my fave here. feels 3d and astonishes on several levels
Katharina Grosse - 9.5 - wow, feels like opening up my brain and just living in color
Tracey emin - 4 - not my kind of art, but appreciate the expression
Albert Oehlen - 6.5 - eye catching but doesn't convay feeling in the same way other abstract art does
Marlene Dumas - 7.5 - strangely captivating, indeed ghostly
Heimo Zobernig - 6 - pleasing to my retinas but feels fake somehow. the text really doesn't help
Miriam Cahn - 8 - not a style of painting I usually prefer, but theres something haunting in the figures
Sean Scully - 3 - nah bro, just feel big for the sake of big
Arnulf Rainer - 7 - ugly on first glance, but it convays some sort of pressure/angst that works surprisingly well
Ugo Rondinone - 6.5 - the vibrant yet unecpected colors work for me, tho some works maybe seem kitchy? i'll give him the benefit of the doubt
Leiko Ikemura - 9.5 - i feel like in a limbo-ish japanese dream where i exist only partly. very mesmerising
Anselm Kiefer - 7 - how he uses objects on the canvas doesnt sit well for me. but the darkness and texture does feel touching

Ed Ruscha - 7.5 - feels different from the rest, more akin to album art it feels. hard to rate...
David Hockney - 5 - not sure if it feels childlike in a refreshing sense or amateurish
Yayoi Kusa - 8.5 - very satisfying
Georg Baselitz - 8 - thes feels like expression done right. makes me feel, not sure yet what, but in a good way
Gerhard Richter - 10 - so versitile, yet everything works and connects to me vibrantly. i need to look into him!
don't take this too seriously. i'm a musician, just interested in all kinds of art. I'll add this to a watch later list and see if I still agree years from now

@lukedotson-wc9gwMost of these artists are merely charlatans who understand the art business all too well. If you examine their work closely within an art-historical context, you realize that their art isn't modern at all; rather, it is a "rehash"—simple, flashy variations on the work of the great masters. They know exactly how to cloak their lack of artistic ability in the guise of pseudo-originality. These works (with the exception of Gerhard Richter’s paintings) actually come across as quite dated. Perhaps that is a reactionary trait of postmodernism. To me, these works aren't even original—they’re just kitsch!

@notsomuch73As an artist, i enjoy seeing other artists work and appreciate it. I believe my abstract is comparable to the artists here, yet getting this kind of acknowledgment is very difficult, unless you have some connections. It’s a very competitive field.
