Thing is not all 360 games got made to run on xbox one and x. And only because they were redownloading a new version of the game rather than have an emulator, emulator was what should of been done. Another MAJOR problem. Digital only you would have to have HUGE huge hardrives. Or constantly delete and re-download. I have 6tb and that isn't even my whole collection. And on top of all this digital only a game can be removed forever if they feel like it whenever they feel like it. Just like what Disney does with their movies. They delete them and no one can watch them ever again.
We need disc drives. We need physical media. Unless they are going to have MASSIVE hardrives 10+ TB internally or cheaply able to expand and not have expensive proprietary expansions. Specially when games are getting huge in size.
All they are trying to do is move to the "You dont own media, you just are allowed to watch, listen, play until they feel like not allowing it anymore"
And I DO NOT WANT TO STREAM games.
And digital has never been cheaper. Even though it should be.

The reported feature would apply to Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs, but not original Xbox or Xbox 360 discs, according to The Verge.

That matters because the industry is moving fast toward an all-digital future. Sony is already shifting away from PlayStation disc production, with its Austria disc plant reportedly being repurposed and staff being reassigned to other products.
If Microsoft can make this work, it could give Xbox players a bridge from physical libraries to the next generation instead of forcing everyone to start over.
Converting disks to digital is Microsoft's way of telling you that they are also ditching physical games, my friends.

The one way I see forward with digital ownership is if a digital product is the same as a physical product in the terms of ownership where I can sell a that digital copy to someone but I have no idea how digital ownership would take place similar to like a physical ownership of the same product

This physical to digital program sounds good, BUT they said it would only work with xbox one and xbox series so what about og xbox and 360? Will the only way to play those og xbox and 360 games on Helix through a separate (hopefully) optional disc drive?

So optical microlenses are used in medical devices, smartphones, AR/VR headsets, etc.... Not trying to excuse Sony, but I would imagine their facility for making game discs would instead generate more income with microlenses. Opportunity costs matter.

So I expected Xbox to officially forgo the disc drive before PlayStation. I wonder if an external or addable drive, similar to the PS5 Pro, and a digital sharing option are what could be an equalizer for Xbox. It would be a poetic twist after the Xbox One fiasco is what led to the brand falling behind (for me, it was still the red ring of death). Question is, are these companies too full steam ahead with their next-gen plans to reassess?

@MalibuJack88Every company likely has a plan like this in place so don’t praise Xbox too much. If any company didn’t that just means their gamers would lose a big chunk (if not all) of their library when consoles go digital. It’s hilarious because Xbox could win a lot of points by uno reversing PlayStation and doing exactly what they did to them in the Xbox one era (that little borrowing games commercial) but Xbox wants this just as bad as PlayStation do so they’re just willing to let PlayStation take more of the backlash for it.

@Juggs_WoWIf the next generation of Xbox games aren't on disc, I won't be buying them. I've already foregone buying the Switch 2 over keykards. When consoles stop using physical media I stop buying them. Period. I've got a 1400+ backlog the vast majority of which have a physical option. I can spend the rest of my life on new experiences through physical media and never buy a new game again. I don't need the PS6 or the Helix to change that. If they want my money they'll continue to use discs.

@ihatepie2630Back in 2013 they announced digital resales and family sharing plans. But people were so angry MS abandoned their vision in favor of traditional ownership, allowing people to play their disc's on their submarines.

It's much more important that movies kept being put onto discs besides streaming, for the sake of the quality and because content comes and goes on streaming. - And that market is bigger than you think it is. - Software on discs just doesn't make much sense to me, though. They should just figure out digital ownership on platforms like Steam, the PlayStation Store and so on. That's where the issue lies for games.
@michaelmonstar4276I wonder how they will prevent the rent-and-rip? for a given SKU all the discs are identical, so are they going to disable the physical disc on the device that rips it? Most of this is already in place and how games work in the first place. Once does not play any game from a physical disc on an Xbox series console. There is a package on the disc that get installed to the console's storage, and the title is played from there. A license remains on the disc, and is what allow you to launch the game package that is installed from that disc, or from the store... once the disc is removed, so is the license, and that package won't be able to launch until the disc is reinserted...

@CrazywhitieThis was already (quietly) possible with the likes of EA and Rockstar. - I know this, because I could NOT activate my physical copies of certain titles like 'Mirror's Edge' and "GTA4" anymore, because they took down things like the key-checkers and that made them useless... until I desperately tried to enter the keys in their respective platforms' launchers, which would still be Origin back then, and also the Rockstar Launcher (which is still about the same today as a few years ago). - That simply worked. And while they might not explicitly explain this anywhere, you could actually simply turn your physical copy (or its key, really) into a digital copy. - Ironically, this was already a thing with music on CDs and movies on DVD/Blu-rays for a long time, of which the copies did explicitly state you could go to a website and download a digital copy, basically as a courtesy for being a paying customer. - Just not really for games, which is an industry that needs to keep behaving like a snowflake.
