World's Most EXTREME Railways

Video Overview & Insights

All aboard for the world's most extreme railways! Choo choo...

Gisborne , NZ , the trains give way to incoming flights - unfortuteately about 3 years ago , a storm took out a 400 meter section of the line , which was used for both passenger , and freight .
Now it's all going by a narrow road , with steep drops & cliffs .
Passenger services , if they do the wellington to Gisbourne run , were stopped , as the Govt , decided it should not be repaired - much has been lost , in letting the track remain in disrepair .

Pfffft, really? The Georgetown loop railroad? That railroad shouldn’t even be on the list! It’s just a narrow gauge railroad in Colorado with a very high bridge! It is not dangerous at all!

The pilatus railway reminds me of the Snowdon Mountain Railway, but instead of a eletric engine, its a STEAM engine.

you know the average tourist, and possibly those living there would know nothing about the tracks trains are running on. Possibly ignorance is bliss

there is nothing like the sound of a steam train.

First of all there's not a guard rail that could hold one of those trains from falling

Not really extreme, but I live outside the eastern Arizona railroad which is the steepest freight railway in America

Dear Sir, Thanks a lot for this wonderful and knowledgeable video. Please look into a minor correction required. The Indian Railway route from Hassan to Mangalore showcases a waterfall called "Dudhsagar falls". Please note that while the Hassan Mangalore route has many tiny waterfalls, the majestic Dudhsagar falls come in the Londa - Vasco d Gama Railway line up in Northern Karnataka - Goa and not in the Hassan Mangalore route

In the Pilatus railway clip, did anyone else notice the creepy giant person grim reaper thing walking close to the tracks? It was right after he says the train cars are shaped to the landscape. Then as the train takes off there is a dude in some robe on the left. Like he is going to intercept the train on the tracks. Or am I nuts.

What about the snowdon mountain railway in Wales

@Aussiehudson2006

What you call "the Bergen line" is not what you show on the map. Your map shows what is known as "SĂžrlandsbanen" = "The southern line" as your map shows, this is mostly a low land route, not far from the coast. What is more - the last 25% of the line drawing doesn't exist. The line ends at the city of Stavanger. There is no line from Stavanger to Bergen.
The Bergen line stretches across the Hardangervidda mountain plateau in a more direct east to west direction.
This is LOUSY research!

We rode the Copper Canyon railway in Mexico, which starts at Los Mochis on the western coast and climbs over the continental divide to end eventually at Chihuahua. It runs along a river and then starts climbing along the sides of a canyon, crossing 37 bridges and going through through 86 tunnels in total. At one point the train is climbing on the right side of the canyon, then crosses a 200' high bridge over the river, then doubles back on the other side, still climbing, then enters the longest tunnel, over a mile long, that does a 180° switchback *inside the mountain*, exiting hundreds of feet higher than the tunnel entrance, then continues, still climbing on the left side before entering another tunnel that goes right through the ridge to the other side. And you're not even there yet.

At the peak of the route you're at 7900 feet and you can finally see the main canyon. We got off there and stayed in a hotel perched on the rim of the canyon, which is longer and deeper than the Grand Canyon. The Copper Canyon is the home of the Tarahumara Indians, famed for their long distance runners. Not surprising, since they actually live in the Canyon and travel all through it by running on narrow tracks than crisscross up and down everywhere. We watched one of the Tarahumarans for 15 minutes as he jogged on a path toward us then climbed up a weathered wood ladder to where we were having lunch. He was wearing sandals made from leather straps and rubber soles salvaged from tire treads, and he couldn't have been less than 70 years old, and he wasn't even out of breath. At nearly 8,000 feet altitude.

That was the most spectacular train trip I've ever taken.

Never mind Japan. The SPS Western line across Baluchistan skirts Koh-e-Taftan an active fumarolic volcano. Two tracks are laid a mile apart to cope with the lava flows (when one is blocked they use the other one).

The picture this channel put up with the train heading into the ocean, obviously Photoshop, tells me that this channel will exagerate any "facts".
So for that reason, I'm out. Unlike and unsubscribe. 👎

It occurs to me I have been on three of these - the Georgetown Loop, Bergen-Oslo and the Devon coastal rote. The Bergen line has another defense - much of the route is through avalanche shelters. Unfortunately these rather spoint the view for travellers!

All the train lines were awesome. But all the talk about no guard rails and hazardous conditions was nauseating. There was adequate safety design in all the railroad lines, if you know what you are looking at. All of those trains maintain regular schedules with no shortage of passengers. Otherwise those trains would not be operating.
