A Plan Is Not a Strategy

Video Overview & Insights

A comprehensive plan—with goals, initiatives, and budgets–is comforting. But starting with a plan is a terrible way to make strategy. Roger Martin, former dean of the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto and one of the world’s leading thinkers on strategy, says developing strategy means going outside an organization’s comfort zone and escaping the common traps of strategic planning.

I will not say strategic planning is an irrelevant word. In pure business term strategy is referred to choices you are making to influence your customers and market. Strategic planning is a good word to summarise when your have multiple plan available for internal operations of your company but your need to strategic thinking on which to act upon.

Tells me people are incorrectly utilizing the phrase “strategic planning” because they don’t understand what planning and strategy actually are, then proceeds to tell me that strategic planning is exactly what every “strategic planning” meeting I’ve ever been in consisted of.

Strategy is more visionary planning is more logistical so all of the things that you said were part of strategy they had a strategy no actually they had a vision but the only way that those visions actually became reality was from having logistics resource allocation and follow-through

Plan = intentions + step by step process
Strategy = fluid cognitive skills
Plan is like a vision board while strategy is like a good wrestler or basketball player. Neither game is the same. But every athlete loves the game or wants to be a good athlete

"STRATEGY" DEFINITELY CAME WITH CAPITALISM - FOR WITHOUT NEED TO CHASE MORE PROFIT, A PLAN WOULD SUFFICE.
