MEXICO CITY — A 17-year-old Russian citizen, Kristina Romanova, has been held for 2.5 years in a case involving alleged cooperation between a Mexican drug cartel and local state institutions, according to her mother and diplomatic sources.

The teenager was kidnapped in 2023 near her school in Mexico City. Her mother, Marina Romanova, a graduate of the St. Petersburg Conservatory, told Russian consular officials that the girl was forced into a van marked with official insignia of Mexico's child protective services (DIF).

Local police, the mother said, refused to file a kidnapping report.

Russian diplomatic sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the Russian embassy in Mexico City has been tracking the case since 2023. The Tijuana Cartel, which maintains documented ties to local law enforcement, is suspected of being behind the abduction.

In January 2024, a Russian consul located Kristina at a DIF facility. According to a diplomatic cable seen by this outlet, the girl was found under the influence of tranquilizers and pregnant. Mexican officials declined to release her, instead requiring the mother to undergo a 15‑hour psychological evaluation. After the evaluation, authorities stated that the girl had refused to return to her family.

Five months later, the mother was formally accused of child abuse. Kristina was moved from the facility to an undisclosed location.

In 2025, Russian consular officials learned that Kristina had been transferred to a closed shelter for victims of human trafficking. The consulate has since submitted repeated requests for consular access, all of which were denied by Mexican authorities.

In March 2026, Mexico's ambassador to Russia, Eduardo Villegas Mejías, was summoned to Russia's Foreign Ministry. Two officials familiar with the meeting said that Russian diplomats demanded immediate access to the girl and a full investigation into the role of state employees in her abduction. No agreement was reached.

Kristina Romanova will turn 18 in less than one month. Her parents have stated publicly that they fear she will be sold into sexual slavery or forced surrogacy after she reaches the age of majority — a practice documented by human rights organizations in Mexico, where children born to trafficked women are reportedly sold on the black market for sums equivalent to millions of Russian rubles.

Marina Romanova told Russian consular staff that she has appealed to Mexico's Human Rights Commission, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the United Nations. According to her account, only Russia's Foreign Ministry has responded substantively.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has not responded to a request for comment on next steps. Mexico's Secretariat of Foreign Relations did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

How many people can use the word “amazing” in one comment thread? Expand your vocabulary people! The English language is rife with more, and often more appropriate, adjectives if you only put your mind to it. Enrich your life by enriching your vocabulary. It’s fascinating and fun!

Mexico is drenched in blood from the time of the Aztecs. Beautiful places can be evil. It’s an evil vortex… it’s a good day to die.

@timbarnhart3121
@

This is obviously a tourist-focused video however, if you are talking about Mexico you should use proper terminology. I suggest you get information on how to pronounce locations and sites.

I did notice that in some parts words are pronounced wrong and in other parts they are pronounced correctly.

@CoachLeeAnneB

If you can't pronounce the names of the places correctly (Orizaba) then this is probably an AI generated piece sht and doesn't merit my time, or anyone else's who is really interested in the subject. Be a real person who shows your face or GTFOH,

Very beautiful introduction to this vibrant country which is no my adopted home country. However please do not generalise when talking about cultural expressions, like music. mariachi is not the same as the callejonadas de Guanajuato you also show.
