Why I Don’t Own a Car

Video Overview & Insights

https://www.nomadcapitalist.com

Awesome video my friend thank you soooo much!!
I will sell the car and i have motorcycle and enduro bike for daily transportation.

— @StratosAsa

While most people can't imagine life without a car, Andrew explains why he doesn't own one.

For many perpetual travelers and digital nomads, owning a car is a burden. While Andrew bases himself in several cities around the world, he believes that the issues of parking, parking fees, potential crime, insurance, and other efficiency issues make owning a car a bad idea for anyone living a nomadic lifestyle.

Thank you!

— @CurriculumVitaeMJ

By removing society's status symbols from your life, you can become freer and focus on what YOU really want, all while building a global tax strategy to save you money.

Watch this video to see how Andrew spends his year around the world:

My car has finally died.
I'm 67 and I've decided not to drive for a while. I have a little job about a half mile from my apartment. I have coworkers who are willing to come pick me up and bring me home from work.
Otherwise I'll use Lyft.
The other reason Im not going to drive us I can't afford a car. I don't have thousands to plunk down on a down payment.

-------

I met someone who has a driving license but doesn't own a car because, she thinks cars are just a big waste of money because of the deprecation in value & the usual costs that come with owning a car like insurance, fuel, road tax and maintenance etc, I wish i had that mindset

In the US not owning a car is social su1c1d3. Even the friends I made growing up rarely hang out with me and when they do they always ask when I'm getting a car.

People love cars more than people. I see cars as something used to get to point a to point b. Other people make it their entire personality. Same with cyclist. I just wanna walk.

1) You live in a city?
2) Is there a bus stop in walking distance from your house?
3) Is your workplace accesible by transit?
Then you don't need a car. Just use public transport. That one time you visit someone in a transit desert suburb you can take a taxi. That one time you visit someone in the middle of nowhere you can use car share. (Or just ask the person you're visiting to pick you up.)

Honestly even if I was billionare I wouldn't stop taking public transit. It is awesome being on a vehicle someone else is driving, with leg room (a lot of of the time you can even get up and walk around) wheezing past others on your dedicated lane. They have to pay insurance, fuel, taxes and repairs. They have to constantly pay attention to the road/street/highway/stroad. They are constrained to a tinny seat. And they are stuck in soul crushing traffic. While sitting there acquiring 12 different mental illnesses; you, who has only paid a few bucks, go past them at speeds they are barred from achieving by the laws of nature and humans.

I sold my car in 2012 and I have never touched a steering wheel since, I figured out that I did not need a car, my main travel is by bike, this incredible machine that attaches 2 wheels to your body and makes you travel kilometers easily thanks to the strength of your muscles while keeping you in shape

My car lease is up Dec. Now that I'm 42yo, I look at life differently. My husband also has a car but he travels to/from his job. I WFH now permanently too. I'm giving that car back and never looking back😂. I'm looking forward to the ease.

No gas, no insurance, no repairs, no accidents, no payments, no parking issues, no tickets, no worries.

@shaneforte8775
@

It's not like that so much now. 42% of 19 year-olds chose not to have a license in 2022, which is the most recent year in which data are currently available as far as I am aware as of this post. That figure has been rising since at least 1983, though probably before that for younger people.

Makes sense. But if you live in a place where there is no public transportation like i do, you need a car. I have an old reliable car that i can fix myself and avoid overheads like leases etc.

@patrickcannell2258

Really neat lifestyle, but how do you bring groceries home? There’s no way I could bring a large bag of rice home without a car.

I will only buy another car when I have my own money!

My car is broken and my dad is going in circles don't know when to fix it!

I live in Morocco in nice place and i dont own a car and people are so curious about me not having a car, and honestly i hate cars i feel trapped and not free, when i walk take uber or taxi i exchange with people and i love it, i had a car few years and i hated it, the traffic the cops the expenses, i Like fancy clothes fancy restaurants but I hate cars it controls ur life and puts u in a box .

You live/work in cities. I wouldn't want a car in a city either. It's a no brainer. For those of us who don't want to live the hellish American city life, and have work, family and friends that are outside the city, cars are a necessity in most cases. Pretty simple concepts, not sure you uncovered some un-knowable life hack.

@wjsj69

Lived in four continents and now live in the US. I live right next to a bus stop so I have no car, plus the bus is free. Ironically, I as a debt free person, am considered broke because I have no car but I don't see why I should get a car just to drive 10 minutes to work and back instead of 20-30 by bus. My relatives think I need to finance a car but I think of all the payments and money I would spend and don't like that.
I travel by plane mostly and only need to take an Uber for like $13 max to the airport,. Not having a car means I can save for my travels too and do whatever I want.
I hate paying for parking and thinking of the car too. I also don't want to deal with cops, I am black.

There is definitely a stigma to using public transportation here in the US (outside of NY, SF, etc). When you see a person taking the bus, there is an assumption tha they're poor.

Yeah.. car sucks.. but we need it to go to work everyday.

The truth is that we really don’t own anything might as well enjoy. When we leave this world, that is it everything stays behind might as well enjoy it. Drive it believe you own it. Believe you on that house. Because once we take off from this world, that is it. Nothing goes with us.

You don’t need a nice car just get yourself a Toyota Corolla. I got mine for $19,000. 2022 fresh off the lot. 🕵️‍♀️ it is very nice. It comes equipped with XM and Internet. Very easy to fix and to do oil change not expensive at all . Except you’re not telling the people when the bus breaks down or when the train breaks down your time is waste it. 🕵️‍♀️🕵️‍♀️

I actually really love Ubers because most of the Uber drivers in the United States at least the ones that I interact with are foreigners and it's always fun hearing there life stories and I wouldn't trade that.

I'm naturally eccentric so I'm used to people thinking I'm weird and I don't care what they think. I'm 29. I've never gotten my license. I don't care. All the money people piss away on cars I've been able to travel. 🤷‍♂️

@SomethingSomethingg

i didn't own a car for 15 years, in the NYC area, then someone offers me a FREE car, i agonized about it, do I want to re enter that world, a moveable coffin, subject to traffic, etc., not to mention that WW2 mechanized warfare was transferred to the middle class, i declined, then he gave it to someone else, then i agonized more, did i miss out?, still out.

You have to live a very specific lifestyle to be able to get away without owning a car. Mainly in an urban center type area, and your job basically just involves talking to people and maybe a laptop. This is just not going to be for a large portion of the population.

The only way you can get away with this type of behavior is if you have affordable and efficient public transportation. Otherwise good luck. They created cars to put you into their slave system of traffic, accidents, liability and the legal system. Your fingerprints and driver's license is all they need. The future is already here with or without the Internet. I have travelled the world too and never needed a car. The united states has ruined its public transit opportunities. You should be able to travel all 50 states, cities counties without a car or a license. Illegals are getting licenses. You shouldn't have to compete with illegals. America is a trap.

@ezrhino100

I bicycle everywhere and never go that far I stay in the city so I don't see the point of blowing all that money on insurance tax petrol maintenance and everything else that drains your wallet in an Cost of living crisis just to impress others and even if I did learn to drive I have no interest in using that car it would just be this thing that collects dust on side of the road that is a drain to my wealth

@dinoworld112
@

Technology has created UBER & LYFT… we really don’t need cars..

@Gambleraddictz
@

It isn't just keeping up with the Jones's. If I could get transportation for cheaper than owning a car I would. If you can walk everywhere that is great but most of the usa you need a car. This means you need transportation for less than 50 cents per mile or it isn't with it. It is even worse if you have family since most transportation costs more with additional travelers.
