What Labels Look For in an Artist | Warner Music President Explains

Video Overview & Insights

If you're hoping one day to get signed and have a long-term record deal, Warner Music's Joe Kentish explains what he saw in Dua Lipa and what it took to get her to become one of the biggest artists in the world.

It just so happened that hot Duilupa tunred up when he was there.. Lol!

β€” @Goodnewsglobal

A record contract can open many doors and give you the resources an artists needs to break, so understanding what labels are looking for is important.

It is a common misconception that labels are looking for streaming numbers and Instagram followers, but it is the potential you show for growth which is what is going to get you signed.

"We do need people with raw talent working FOR record companies".

πŸŽ™οΈ OUR PODCAST:

Warner Music is a pop manufacturing business, Dua Lipa the perfect example of who they want, a drama school graduate who can sing and dance a bit, beautiful and who can sing in a convincing American accent. Warner doesn't want a real artist who can write songs and play an instrument and who have their own creative vision.

So, if anything music pundits said was true, about what new musicians need to do, ONE MUSICIAN WOULD HAVE BROKEN THROUGH IN THE LAST DECADE! Someone would have come up with a new music, new style, and a hit song! But they did not! Its the same generic , robo vocal, top 40! Can anyone disprove that? NOTHING WORKS NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO Musicians!!!

ASCAP COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT. I’m suing Warner music group. I’m willing to settle if they’re smart.

Record companies. Building the fame, killing the artist

Seeing someone in a position of power talk like this is really damming. He dances around it as much as he can but what he is really saying is that you need to have a huge following already.

What a mess.

TRANSLATION: Great songs, great albums, great talent actually mean nothing. We want people who already have huge social media following, spend hours every day on social media, create content which gets a bazilion likes every day, and have a curated image and personality that people want to look at on their screens. This isn't even the music business anymore, it's just banks giving super high interest loans to people who pose very little risk. This whole thing is just stupid.

Oh btw , her record label is Warner 🀣

Thank you Rick for enlightening me to the reality of the music industry. It will not be long before knowing how to play an actual musical instrument is not necessary in creating music.

Labels are not interested in art, investing in and developing artists. All they want is to find the easiest way to make the most money. So for all of the nonsense he just said is just that. Nonsense.

You are pathetic. Basically want to use artists hard work and will sign if they are already successful. No more development of artists within labels. Go blow your nose Joe.

Heard this buzzing around in music industry circles... "Be sexy, or be someone people want to be like." Notorious BIG for example. Fat, ugly, had a lazy eye. Put on sunglasses, dress him up like a mobster, promote him as a kingpin of the criminal underground. Sell rap records.

Dua Lipa... Sexy, looks better than Victoria's secret models... Yeah her voice... πŸ˜‚

With Melodyne editor and autotune, we don't need ugly people who can sing anymore. Sex sells.

Compelling music need not apply.

Example? Meagan the stallion - Lick
Cardi B - WAP
Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift, etc. All sexy women, most doing sexy songs.

Guys are the same. Kodak Black ugly af but is portrayed as a criminal street thug, gangsta, living like mob bosses. Bruno Mars (who sings great), Andersen Paak, Da Baby, Lil Durk, Drake etc. Women like their looks. K Pop, boy bands, reggaeton artists etc. All have to be insanely good looking to women.

Being extremely sexy or being really cool are prerequisites to getting signed. The studio can always fix their sound.

@jimmurphy9904

Here's a question. Why is there no mainstream super popular artists that are disabled?

@alanmakesfilm5253
@

Interesting however there is one big thing the Warner rep is leaving out here and that is SEXUALIZATION of look and content. Nearly every one of Dua Lipa's biggest songs are all about having sex "I want you all night come dance (Fuxx) with Me" or "If you don't wanna see me dancing (Fuxxing) with somebody" She dress very sexaul in almost prostitute outfits like how she dressed for 2021 Brit Awards. This is commen amung female artists signed to big label's and often plays more of a roll in succes then the tallent of the artist. If you havent got sex appeal your not going anywhere no matter how good a singer you are.

@HOLLASOUNDS
@

Warner have SEXUALIZED Dua Lipa and that's the main reason she's so successful but He's not going to give you that secret.

Imagine they sign you and put you on the shelf...not being able to release your music when you want...they take a substantial percentage of your streaming and earnings in general and ahh by the end of it...you don’t even own your music most of the time......they keep your masters...
