What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT Therapy Explained)
Video Overview & Insights
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or "ACT" said as one word is an evidence-based third wave cognitive behavioral therapy that teaches people how to accept their full experience, recognize patterns of avoidance and learn to break unhelpful patterns in service of their values and living a meaningful life.
Therapy might be the most difficult form of practice in health cause it is so muddy and difficult to understand.
We can understand certain behaviours but the brain is so different for every person on top of genes and individual differences. Even the most famous psychologists and people researching it are criticized and their research and methods are questioned. It's not anything objective. Probably even AI developed and processing data for years still won't get anything too concrete. The way therapists and psychologists make new methods and changes things only shows how complicated and difficult the brain is as a subject. Even directly targeting the brain is difficult and there's still need for tools and methods to read it. We can see activity and map certain conditions. But there's a lot to be done. My personal issue is tinnitus and anxiety. And I hope one day they can find ways to diagnose and deal with certain types at least. Anything at this point.

@markdrahbeg9876Girl this is a load of ...... I say this and realizing that ultimately what it does is nothing I know what is not beneficial to me already but I also know I will not accept certain things I also know that those certain things that I will not accept cannot be changed that does not make my life better oh well why I believe we should have euthanasia programs if you're considered sane of mind and over the age of 18 and you don't want to continue it's okay we should be allowed to go and terminate ourselves without any questions asked by choice we should never encourage it though it is horrible to encourage death that is wrong however if someone wants to just opt out I guess is a good way of saying it what's wrong with that even if they're perfectly healthy
@ZacharyLedI just looked for a video to show my intro class, Jess, and here you are!! It's KJ Kessie. BRAVO MI AMIGA!!!
@liljo2422Jessica, do you havs courses online for CEUs that I can take? I got your new book and it's already teaching me so much! I'd love to learn more (and get credit for it too š).
@risab9462Lot of what you talk about has been known Buddhist principles and stories like the two arrow story . Just renamed ACT
@World_of_foilHaven't teaching mindfulness for over 20 years and I can see you're obviously very learned but And I hear you saying about 150 million words but I still feel like you're not touching on the most important thing that can be helpful in terms of really what mindfulness is being present in this moment non-judgmentally but also then responding to the moment. And then living fully and wholeheartedly each moment, and embracing each moment fully and wholeheartedly. I don't hear that at all so I don't feel like you're getting to the heart of the matter of the use of mindfulness. You don't have to listen to me but I'm just giving you a tip that I think can be helpful to you
@pschlosbgreat video
@TheBierman19Excellent description of ACT. Several years ago i was introduced to ACT at a three day workshop with Dr Russ Harris who has also written several books on ACT. I trained as a Psychologist and there are many studies that have found that ACT has helped people to overcome many fears/barriers that have affected people for years. š
@IrmeliFoxDo you think act can work with evidence based psychodynamic therapy?
@emilianoortiz6094As a second semester grad student in a CMHC program - this is a pot of gold!! Thank you!!
@AbbyLawson-s3uHi Jessica, thanks for this informative video about ACT. Definitely a lot of value in this therapy approach! I am curious about your citation of it's origins. My understanding is that the foundation of all third-wave mindfulness psychotherapy theories draw foundational influence from Eastern traditions like Buddhism and Taoism. This is where the idea of the universality of suffering and the practice of observing oneās thoughts rather than identifying with them comes from. And we know that Steven Hayes himself studied Eastern religions before developing ACT. I think it would be appropriate to reference this when discussing the origins of this therapy. Iād be interested to hear your thoughts on this.
@clementineofarrell8670When you starting videos again ?
@xaxaxa12Pretty worthless video, except that I agree that trying to avoid pain makes things worse. Say you're a coward like me. How would ACT make me not a coward?
@jeffanderson963So in the first 4 minutes you haven't told us what it is at all. Can't you just cut to the chase?
@jeffanderson963You did everything but explain what ACT is or is not.
@leelewis5068I'm a therapist... This is a good video
@DrVani-jq4chI love ACT! I made a song that feels kinda' like an ACT anthem to me š. Let me know if it strikes a chord at all! https://youtu.be/EQsRBV18qFI?si=-ZtO-x6JZjncwbyr
@jeffarnold7245I hope this is taken as the constructive feedback it's intended as. I think the language used in explaining act is needlessly complicated. This video has so many cuts it makes me believe that no one involved in it knows how to explain it with clear language.
Additionally, I think that if you view the mind, or problems of your patients as dirty dishes you've left in the sink, you shouldn't be responsible to their care. That is horribly imagery, incredibly judgemental, and not a helpful way to view your clients and or their problems, in my opinion. I think it also reduces their issues to something far more trivial. This is an example of what I think of as ill fitting language to explain or talk about a therapy.
This sounds a lot like Logotherapy actually, did ACT take any inspiration from Frankl's work?
@betolangsch5589Is ACT something that can be done on our own?
@roxannerodriguez7075Just introduced to this therapy today. Your explanations are helpful. Iām so grateful you have a channel. Iām tired of issues and chores piling up.
@danamcgiffin1150@0:45 I refuse to accept "ACT" not "A.C.T." š
@Ross_EmbossedCheck that "snake neck" tic you exhibit, it comes across as agressive and defensive.
@Lamoka54How do see ACT dovetailing with Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy?
@SteveSilverActorIt's not unique. It's Buddhism
@neogodly4008You donāt like a therapist and your content seems contradictory
@welabsI watched halfš the video and you haven't said one thing about what it actually is
@ArtemisXSo much of ACT has been practiced by existential therapists for decades. They just didn't empirically research it and try to make money off of it.
@RduckificationHope you visit India one day and give awareness lecture
@arifmaghribiAmazing. I become familliear on acceptance commitmeant theraphey.
@mahbubasgardenandcooking9264Very well articulated
@vgmail8356As a psychologist, it can be very difficult to switch sets or stay flexible in treatment, especially given how many different kinds of therapies and modalities there are to potentially use. Each individual person usually needs something different. ACT is a great way to help some people, but not everybody benefits equally. For example, it's more useful for chronic pain than PTSD (see Div 12 list of empirically-supported treatments). Some ACT principles are too abstract for some people, and many metaphors and exercises don't apply well to others. But I do think every clinician should learn ACT and consider when to or not to use it, depending on the individual or situation. Probably everybody can benefit from more nonjudgmental observation, acceptance, and living a life according to one's values :)
@aimsonMy therapist assigned me a workshop and of course I had to check it out behind the scenes. And damn⦠she knows me so well š
@liilianalopez1155Adult living in California interested in starting therapy?
@JamesVestal-dz5qmdude is pretty, high-vocab and charming at the same time. i mean, it was a fine intro, thx then
@arianjnbz2003"Therapy" is the biggest pile of bullshit time wasting I've ever done in my life. You people are psychopaths abusing your patients.
@Fellow_Traveller1985There are huge gaps in any and every therapy shape or form, in my experience. In the end all therapy is about regulation of thoughts, feelings and actions.
@Rob0t-xyzWhat's up Jessica!
@TonyBonadioSteven Covey?
@beverlyannpietlicki7295Prince Run
@BrianDavis-w2bThank you so much for this video.
@greg9336ACT is not really a "therapy." It's accepting that everything is shit and pushing forward with your "values" despite it. That's the short version. I've done it, and this is how it was presented to me. PS: It doesn't really work.
@ArtisticMysticSoulHow can we compare this to DBT?
@CandidCatsBlogWhat a bad explanation. It is a religious way of explanation. Talking how good it is is not what it is.
@BenoitPhilipsIve been doing this for decades...never knew it had a name though. I just used pavlovian responses to emotions to condition new beneficial patterns.
@smokeystacks420Thank you for offering your help.
@stevensvideosonyoutubeACT is no more expensive than any other type of therapy.
