Vital Farms: The Pasture-Raised Egg Company That Became A Whole Foods Favorite | Forbes

Video Overview & Insights

Matt O’Hayer has carved out a niche in the more than $5 billion egg industry. When O’Hayer started his company, Vital Farms, in 2007, he committed to producing “pasture-raised” eggs—the accepted standard being 108 feet of space per hen. Back then, pasture-raised eggs represented less than 0.1% of the market. Now it’s 2.7%, and O’Hayer’s Austin-based Vital Farms has about 73% of that 2.7%. The company, which employs 110, hit sales of $100 million last year, up nearly a third from 2016. It has grown beyond Whole Foods and figured out how to get mainstream consumers—in chains like Amazon Fresh, Kroger, Walmart, and Target—to pay artisanal prices, as much as much as $8 a dozen.

They mostly feed their hens corn and soy. They add turmeric to make the yolks look more orange. They allow their hens to wander outside, but unlike other “pasture raised” hens, many do not use portable hen houses to continuously provide fresh grassy areas to wander. They charge a fortune for these eggs.

I appreciate the quality of care Vital Farms provides for their Chickens free range and as a result the quality of products (eggs) demonstrates the Best Eggs in the States. Which brings me to the point you pay for quality and your health ❤

FDA needs to look into the practices of their butter and egg processing. I do not think they are being honest.

I love the Vital Farm eggs. The commercial eggs are fed a diet of soy and corn. Pasture raised eggs rom free eating grass, bugs. The yolk is darker in color, and has a stronger amount of vitamins and minerals. Not to mention they taste better I tried the Whole Foods new ones but, they are not organic and don’t taste as good as the Vital Farms organic pasture raised eggs.

Yeah too bad they still cull their chicks

@TAEYYO
@

stop male chick culling if you are truly a ethical company, just investing in research is not enough. France and parts of Europe already are using a technology to address the issue. This only shows that you are just same as others and focused on more profits and greed without doing any good. or don't call yourself ethical... simple.

I have always bought Nellies eggs but Hannaford grocery now sells vital eggs and I bought them because they were out of Nellies. I feel confident feeding my family either....but for how long? Are you inoculating the chickens yet and if not will you be in the future? Would be interested to know. You have a happy looking farm.😀💝

I thought it was hype like the free range where most of the chickens never leave the coop and don't even know their is a small opening at one end of the coop. However, I tried them, even though they were 3 times the price before the increase in egg prices. I never went back. These eggs are tasty and as egg prices rise, the prices haven't risen for Vital farms' egg much if at all. The yoke is a beautiful orange. The taste is delicious! I tried another brand that was better than factory raised eggs, but were not as tasty. Don't be fooled by the color of the yoke in other brands as now the factory eggs are adding something in the food that give the orange color, but doesn't improve their taste. Highly recommend Vital Eggs and you can eat less because you are savoring the taste instead of gulping them down.

I really don't mind paying 12 dollars a carton of VF eggs. It's the quality! And my health that matters!🙌🥚🥚🥚🙌
