Verdun, the Battle of the Great War

Video Overview & Insights

From February to December 1916, the French and Germans waged one of the First World War’s most devastating battles in order to take control of the hills around Verdun. A head on confrontation, fought with no help from their allies, army versus army, nation versus nation. 11 months of fighting, over 2 million soldiers mobilised and 300,000 dead.

Миллионы Европейских мужчин пропустили через эту мясорубку! Абсолютно бесполезная и кровопролитная бойня!

— @Roci-o9c

Today, this massacre seems senseless. But in 1916, soldiers on both sides accepted to go into battle. Why?

This documentary looks back at this insane battle that was to become the bloodiest chapter of the First World War. Looking back through the personal archives of veterans, delving into their daily lives, their dreams and their nightmares, but also using historical re-enactments and numerous computer-generated images, Verdun, the Battle of the Great War revisits France’s last great victory over Germany. A battle that would become the symbol of nationalist folly and age-old hostility between two nations.

Das kann mann sich nicht anhören.

Doumont was not expected to serve well in this new form of warfare. Thats just bullshit that Doumont was a high tech fort. The French basically abandoned it and there where basically no death caused by aking the Fort.

They were ready to fight. Why? Because refusing meant prison or death.
That is how wars are made: people comply with narratives they no longer believe, because fear leaves them no real choice.
Fear is the oldest weapon of power — the force that turns the world into hell.

Look it up. The original german plan never called for an attack but to simply station troops near verdun, hoping the French would transfer troops from the existing front lines and thus thin the french lines.

My French Great-grandfather was a soldier with the 4eme Ligne Regiment Infantrie 3rd Brigade and he fought in the opening months of Verdun.

He and a wounded comrade were the last ones standing in his sector from his brigade, 3200 of his comrades fell to German artillery and infantry attacks within a few months.

The relieving unit to come take their place expressed in shocked to see two stumbling men covered in blood and mud return back to the rear line, they hadnt known what they were about to get themselves into.

My Great-grandfather was inducted into the Tulle army collection point April 15, 1915 and was demobilized December 15, 1919. Was always a Soldat 2eme Classe, he was never promoted during the war, he was wounded twice, and was the brigade runner up until Verdun.

Currently in possession of his M15 greatcoat he wore most of the war, still stained in the blood of his friends from Verdun and the mud of war.
