What Happened

On 21 January 1968, a U.S. Air Force B-52 bomber carrying 4 nuclear warheads, each 80 times the destructive capacity of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs, on a routine “Chrome Dome” airborne alert mission—keeping nuclear-armed bombers aloft around the clock in case of sudden war—caught fire over Baffin Bay while approaching Thule Air Base in northwest Greenland.
• The crash: The unmanned B-52 crashed onto the sea ice of North Star Bay (near present-day Qaanaaq) just outside the base.
• Nuclear mishap: The conventional high explosives in the aircraft’s four thermonuclear bombs detonated on impact. That ruptured and dispersed radioactive materials (like plutonium, tritium, uranium, and americium) across the ice and nearby waters. There was no full nuclear explosion but the weapons were effectively destroyed and contaminated the environment.

⚠ Environmental and Cleanup Efforts

The crash scattered radioactive debris over a sizable area; plutonium contamination reached measurable levels in ice, seawater, and sediments. Local fishing and hunting were initially banned.

12 Inuk men forced out of Thule by the American army base to a newly set up village a 150 km north of Thule, were despatched on an initial recovery mission of radioactive debris. These men were not informed of the danger and later died of cancers related to radioactivity.
A massive joint recovery effort—code-named Operation Crested Ice—was launched. U.S. and Danish personnel scraped contaminated ice, built access roads, and packed radioactive material into containers shipped back to the U.S. Not all was recovered and radioactive material lays buried in the Arctic ice.
