Touring Car Racing's Golden Age | Full Story [Documentary]
Video Overview & Insights
DTM's Group A era was peak touring car racing. Even at the height of the championship’s popularity it remained un-polished, much to the dismay of organisers, and to me it represents so much of what I love about motorsport. The cars may not have been the fastest in the world, but some of the drivers certainly were, and what exciting racing it was!
Full Story is a series wherein each video contains all previous videos on a single topic, compiled into a marathon documentary. This video contains a few new bits (including brand new stand-alone sections about the Volvo 240 Turbo and Rover SD1 Vitesse), but if you recognise parts, its probably not deja vu. Regardless of how much or little you have seen before, I hope you enjoy!

IMO, the Merc CLK-DTM (W209) production car is one of the best looking cars ever made.

Always wondered why Ford didn’t enter the mustang in DTM back then

Group A, Group B rally, and Group 5 were the most exciting classes. Watching the Sierra's and Skyline's battle and the pure insanity of super silhouette along with Group B rally is what racing is supposed to be.

I still don't understand why Ford didn't just shove a DFV in the Sierra and send it, it is by far the best engine they ever made, since other competitors used V8s too I think they would still be competitive.

Chapters:
:)
0:00 – Intro
1:07 – BMW 635 CSi
Audi should have rolled the Audi V8 in Australia in the early '90s. Would have been very competitive and especially into the V8 Supercars era...Shame.
2:24 – Volvo 240 Turbo
4:39 – Rover SD1 “Vitesse”
The rover V8 is actually lighter than the cosworth YB. It's all aluminium weighing about 210 kg, much shorter than the BMW M30 6 cylinder and with only 3.5 liters capacity, one of the smallest V8's produced at the time
7:17 – BMW E30 M3
21:57 – Ford Sierra RS500
Nice video but most of it was about ford sierra and not about DTM
38:52 – Audi V8 Quattro
50:35 – Mercedes 190E 2.5 16 Evo II
it´s the "group-a years" and not "group a years", because it's not a group of years..
1:05:51 – Alfa Romeo 155 V6 TI
1:19:19 - Conclusion
I enjoyed the video. One day I would like to own an E 30 M3 but they just keep getting more and more expensive

Well done Sir
Thank you.
The C-merc were pretty wild.
I have Star (mercedes club) magazine that covered those.
Weight penalty were regular and the mercs had the weight on track in the passenger seat that would move fore and aft during the race.
Also, for a bit, the 1st.race was 20 or 25 min and second a hour or so, both on the same day.
The Merc with mainly carbon tubs could exchange the frt clip in 20min.
The clip included, firewall forward.
Motor, trany, front suspension, wheels and brakes. Epic stuff.
Also, f1.had band active suspension after 1993, found a home in DTM..

It really was the German touring car championship. They just had to get ford out so they made fords heavier and cut their horsepower. And still ford beat them.😂😂 So they just made it to costly and difficult for ford. So they just quit.

The only ones fighting a faire battle against each other were BMW, Mercedes and Alfa, those were actual same category cars.

Very well done, @automobilistic , watched the whole thing! Sometimes repeating yourself, but it was a great blast into the past about a lot of my favourite cars growing up. I still have an Opel Astra V8 Coupe DTM car from Tamiya plastic models that I am now going to build. Hans Stück was such a crazy! Thank you for this video, it made my day. Skål!! #DTM 😎 👏

The Volvo 240's that were raced were the only evolution version of the car sold, The cars were legal for sale in the US, all 500 0f them, none of them were ever offered for sale to the public.
More User Perspectives
Both ford and audi where forced out of the competition for no reason what a shame
@mohamedalmahdi9175I bet a modern DTM sim racer set in this era, would do pretty good.
I know you can kind of simulate this in different sims, but none of them has all the tracks and cars.
Fantastic video! Would be so nice to have videos on later eras of DTM and also some stuff about BTCC!
@mateuszkunda9400You said the Volvo 240 turbo pushed out 340hp, the road going variant???!! More like 140hp. That's a big mistake to make.
@ferguscasey5301It was not BMW's fault that they started losing with their best EVO 3 evolution, it was the fact that Audi had a totally unfair advantage! It should have been banned from the beginning and not allowed to compete. Although it weighed more, it still had Superior V8 torque, displacement and the number of cylinders matters! Also the fact that they had all-wheel drive is totally unfair against the rest of the competition which is rear wheel drive mostly. That is not a level of playing ground. I am sorry. I don't know what those guys were smoking or drinking back then, but they should not have been allowed to compete unless everybody was all-wheel drive!
@RARRRRRRRRRRRi dont know if we shouldnt find another word for cheating in racing .. since the saying "if you aint cheating .. you aint even trying" and when cheating is sooo deeply part of motorsport .. we should give it a less negative name like "overtrying" or "rulebending"!
@n00g75Just me...or does the Alfa sound like a dirtbike
@LeotheleprachaunWill still never understand why Audi didn't just y'know...ADD THAT CRANKSHAFT AS AN OPTION to the street car(but make it spendy asf for customers so they wouldnt need to actually make road ones) BAMM!! Not illegal if it is offered for the road car.

Heinz Frederick Pyle flexin the Casio Calculator!
Great video mate.
@matt355Oh so DTM just means strudel schnitchelz cars? I thought it stood for Da Ting Mon. Glad i got that figured out in under 15 seconds.
@patrickisswayze3446Someone shpuld make a new game based on this era
@sulphuroxide1DTM =OPEL 💪
@jenniferdoldersum559This looks like an hell of job, can't wait to watch it!
@MrBoost96I was at the road racing tracks on the West Coast of America in the 1960s and 1970s with my uncle, Dick Anderson, a top BMC mechanic.
There were mostly the BMC Mini Coopers, English Ford Lotus Cortina GTs, US Ford Falcons, US Mercury Comets, and Alfa Romeo sedans.
So, while not winning BMW and Mercedes got rid of two competitors: first Ford and then Audi in order to be able to win. Sounds fair to me.
@VorsichtStufeFully agree with you, the current BMWs are just ugly (except the 3 series), especially the SUVs.
@VorsichtStufe40:30 Hey, I'm almost sure that Quattro has an Ontario plate!
@LiahT27Love these compilations, but the transitions in audio levels between video segments is sometimes kinda jarring
@LiahT27Anybody know how a disabled guy could go racing without having any money... No... that's what I thought! I had to settle for working as a speed courier and sim racing. I use to battle sports cars on the Tail of the Dragon in a 1987 Chevy G20 cargo Van that had a built sbc and a turbo350 3 speed trans. I was out driving motorcycles as I could just hold it in 1st gear and drift the hairpins without loss of speed. I was driving all out and felt like I was part of the Van! I was so fast that people thought I had a Vette drivetrain placed in the middle, nope, just a base modal cargo van with a built engine and transmission skills on 4 wheels! (They had a latter frame with stiff springs for hailing heavy loads that made it corner flat)
@MaxSkullicwhere is the opel ?
@egomorekapiosDTM leaders literally pushed constructors out of their championship and then wondered why no one would participate in '92.
@battlebooms64291st class docu sir! :)
@Desire4Soundtoo much nationalistic pride in these rule maker doofuses. always ruin a good thing out of jealousy
@BurntRAMWhere the Datsuns at 🤔💪
@karhlhenselien2260Definitely a great era of racing! Basically, from the early 70's (IMSA) to about 99'. Group B and A Rally, IMSA, DTM, JDTC, and Formula 500. Early GT-1 & GT-3 were amazing as well! Like the 98' or so 911 GT-1 Road Car or Merc. CLK GT-1 Road Car. And when you could see the McLaren F1 and Jaguar XJ220 mobbing down the track. Even that crazy sick Bugatti EB110 raced (didn't it? I swear it did). This video (unless I nodded off at some point) left out the Volvo Wagons kickin ass, and basically left out the Opel/Vauxall Calibra, Astra, and Tigra. Such sick cars! Didn't Panoz field a car in DTM as well? Can't remember, cause I am old enough to have watched all of these races (born in 83' 😕🤦♂️) when they were live.
@Depth_of_Breadth39:33 Beautiful motor !!!
@xIAGIxWhat a video! Thank you!
@Plasticjesus504If you want to see just how good the RS500 Sierra was, look at Dick Johnson Racing in Australia. Their Sierra were the fastest group A cars inbthe world until the Nissan GTR arrived.
@Not_A_CatVolvo 240 road going version had 150 bhp
@lagcossy7354The footage, the script, the narration, this is outstanding work. Subscribed.
@Janika-xj2bvfunny how europeans will talk s__t on american cars but leave out how we dominated you in racing at le mans and rally...... we stopped giving a s__t once we destroyed you. what have you made that can take an RS200? like ever.... even modern stuff..... ill wait..... oh, and we won both world wars for you, seeing as how europe started both of them and resolved neither.... good job "blokes"
@youdoofusDTM felt relatable and aspirational, we could see ourselves owning those cars.
But with the shift in focus to GT3, racing is cool but it’s lost that everyday appeal.
