I dealt with a lot of smart breeds. Intelligence comes in different ways, you have intelligence in terms of recall, remembering things then you have intelligence in terms of working out problems, for example, poodles like the thinking through problems. Collies are very good at remembering complex commands over many years.

If you’re looking to get a smart dog they are a lot of work but very satisfying and make you seem like the best trainer ever! Remember, smart dogs have neuroticism’s, and can develop bad habits, they can also read you and learn to manipulate you so you have to be firm and consistent! Keep them intellectually, busy with toys, activities and training, and they’ll be happy pups for all of their life

Iv had a doberman, a rottweiler, and a German shepherd in my life... I now have a Border Collie.. Not to say that those breeds I had before aren't smart, but I am saying that the BC is hands down the smartest breed in the world, and it isn't close.

I have a standard poodle. Great dog and smarter than me. Lol

I had an 7-8-year-old Rottie who picked up my training tips seemingly instantly like lift one back foot, then the other, "Bosco" would get a freeze-dried beef liver treat or two. Highly motivated to please me, he also quit activities that displeased me. I never spoke a harsh word to him, I was his "chosen human".

I was consistent with him from moment one when I brought him home the next day , but he chose me immediately in the meet-and-greet area of the shelter, ignoring the volunteer who fed, walked, and otherwise cared for him, (although Bosco--named by shelter staff as Bruiser and Bowser, a two-time foster failure) he wanted to keep going out of the meet-and-greet, on leash, to the parking lot with me which shocked the volunteer(and after putting his paws up on my shoulders and wagging his tail, all he did for my husband (who had grown up with dogs, had far more than I'd ever had), was on guard against him for the 1st five minutes when he got home after work, every day.

All I have of Bosco is loving, sweet memories for protecting me (literally) against harm, and being so loyal.

Rest in peace Sweet Boy, and know that if I can I'll get another Rottie before I die, but he'll never get more of my love than I felt and showed you. 🙂

Standard Poodles are great learners -- steady temperament, but I have found them to be way out of my price range.

Where is the English Springer, it has to be top 10 on that list..

Why is Belgian Malinois not included?

This is strange cause it reminds me of a top 10 i read probably 10yrs ago, I just remember the top 5 was like..
5- Australian Shepherd
4- Goldie (where they are here)
3- poodle
2- German shepherd (they just switched the 2 and 3 here)
And #1 was still border collie

My golden is too smart for her own good

I have a border collie and I can confirm she's INTELLIGENT, she used to open doors but she's too old for that now.

Never had a Border Collie or Poodle, had a runt female German Shepherd that would get the paper in the rain, and open the door for me if I locked myself out as a boy.
Someone had put it in a bag and left it on a dirt road, smartest dog I've ever seen. Frisky was her name.

And poodles were actually used as guard dogs as well

Most dogs are by far more intelligent and more worthy creatures than most people. I never had a dog, until my daughter decided to get one when she started medical school. But soon, she figured out it was not easy to take care of the dog while in medical school. So, I ended up with a most beautiful White German Shepherd called Bellissima. (There is a picture of her on my Channel).



She is not only beautiful, but also very intelligent. She knows when I put down my reading glasses and pick up my regular eye glasses, it is time for a walk. She also is very keenly aware of my routine. One night, I woke up in the middle of night and noticed that she had walked up to the second floor and was sitting next to my bed, which is very unusual for her. She was hitting her nose against my feet. At first, I figured she needed to go out. So, I took her out, but noticed that was not her concern. And when she repeated the same act, I realized that I had forgotten to take my medication which helps me to get restful sleep.

I think my Akita is more intelligent than any on this list - particularly border collies. We have one near us that's demented.
