My phone actually saved me one time. I was 15/16 going to the bus station around 1 pm- to go to school. Couple of my neighbors were already on the bus station waiting. This van comes up to me and I thought he needed directions (which is very common), he asks me if I'm heading to the place my school is at, and that I should hopp in and he'll drive me. (Mind you I've never met the guy, he was a man in his early 30's) I lie and say I'm heading somewhere else and the bus is around the corner. He then says that he is also heading to the place I lied I was going to. (Hope this makes sense)I said no thank you, my bus is on the way. Then he very aggressively says:" Why, just get in already!" LUCKILY I had my phone in my hands and I pretended to call my dad, and put the phone on my ear. And I said:" No!" to him. When he saw me dialing somebody he drove so fast that I couldn't type in the registration of his van. Also the neighbors standing about 20/30 meters helped my situation, but I was terrified.
PS. I didn't even have any credit on my phone, thankfully he thought I was actually calling someone so he ran away.

This is late but BELLS ON THE DOOR WORK. My mom when she lived in her apartment was scared by my dad coming in quietly when she was cleaning and threw her handfuls of shoes at him and ended up getting a bell for the door handle, and now we always have one that sometimes even our dog was trained to alert us when she needs to go out
