Back in the 1960s I first visited Maine and fell in love with the state. For decades I visited, established friendships. bought a 75 acre tract of land, built a small vacation cabin. In the beginning my dream was to live there permanently. I was working in a factory in NJ and taking college courses at night. As the years went by reality set in. I saw a lot of poverty and a lot of people just getting by. I wanted to teach high school. It would have been a bad decision. At least not in Maine. I finally sold my land and cabin, said goodbye to all the good memories. Today I am a retired teacher (22 years ago) living in the northwestern mountains of North Carolina. This article is so very accurate, in my opinion, I understand completely.

We left Maine. Beautiful place, but if look below the surface, it is a corrupt place.

I love to stay to Maine in the late 80s because it was nothing here there was no real job there was nothing here in the late 80s you could work on a farm you could move to like Auburn or Portland But then you still get paid nothing you were lucky to get minimum wage or just above it in this state and then the state tax on top of it take half your check away right now they're taking 40% of my check in taxes in the state of Maine what the fuck and why are we so far behind everything if we're taking so much fucking money from everybody why aren't we right up there with everybody else why are we so far behind a technology and everything else because this state is full of corrupt fucking politicians
