In my view, more than 95% of YouTubers’ price predictions for Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and other cryptocurrencies (altcoins) since 2024 have been far from accurate.
The 2021 bull run was largely driven by whales and retail investors. Although most retailers didn’t invest massive amounts individually, together they played a major role. At that time, institutional and ETF participation was almost non-existent, yet BTC reached an all-time high of around USD 68,000 in November 2021. Many altcoins surged between 30X and 50X in that same cycle.
In 2021, there were only a limited number of altcoins, resulting in higher capital concentration. Whales would invest heavily in BTC, take profits as the price rose, and rotate those gains into altcoins—fueling explosive rallies.
The situation today is entirely different.
There are now over 30,000 well-known altcoins, each with its own market capitalisation. Every day, new coins are launched. Most of these “new” tokens rise quickly in their first couple of weeks and then collapse, leaving investors with heavy losses. Many retail traders sell their good holdings to chase these short-lived coins, only to be outplayed by whales and market manipulators.
Because of this massive dilution of capital across thousands of tokens, the kind of across-the-board 30X–50X returns seen in 2021 are no longer realistic.
Another key difference is the source of the money.
Today, institutional investors and ETFs are driving the market — especially into BTC (and to a lesser extent ETH). These investors are not the type to sell BTC to gamble on risky altcoins. Their strategies are conservative and long-term.
That’s why BTC has already surpassed USD 100,000, mainly on institutional and ETF demand — not whale or retail speculation. As a result, altcoins haven’t seen the same upside momentum this time.
Retail participation only started picking up again around July 2025, after the April “tariffs crash.” You can see altcoins beginning to move upward from that point. However, ongoing geopolitical tensions — such as the U.S. trade war with several countries — continue to pressure the market and cause heavy liquidations.
Market manipulation remains a significant issue.
Some centralised exchanges appear to push prices down to buy back assets at lower levels. Negative news triggers instant sell-offs, while positive developments barely move prices. Retail traders are exhausted, many have lost faith, and the market currently lacks the emotional excitement that drives explosive rallies.
In short, this is not yet a “good news” market.
Until confidence, fresh liquidity, and new retail participation return, the broader altcoin market is likely to remain suppressed — while BTC and ETH benefit from institutional accumulation.
