The Video Game Walkthrough - Scott The Woz

Video Overview & Insights

Scott gets help.

I’ve played Spacechem and there are so many solutions to the levels
Thing is it’s an obscure and old game so all of the guides are in the deep recesses of youtube and the internet in general
I also used the Orange Box guide to beat Half-Life 2 and learn some new tricks to play as spy
Although Jon and a friend of mine gave me better advice

The worst strategy guide I've seen has to be the one for Mortal Kombat (2011). It's constantly filled with misinformation, deliberately left out damage and frame data and just saying things that don't add up or would become severely outdated and because tons of people bought it and trusted what was in the guide the competitive scene was held back and everything players needed to know took YEARS to discover

— @ScottHamrick01

"World Map" from Donkey Kong Country

"Collection Room" from Sonic Generations

I've Always prefered to Look Up a Guide over Just looking the answer up online. Yes i could Just Google how to brew a Minecraft potion but i have a book that tells me so i will use the book damit!

— @aguy5356

"Sanctuary" from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

"Mario Stadium" from Fortune Street

I swear the Prima Pokemon Platinum guide is what really made Pokemon my hyperfixation

— @firesonic23

"Brinstar" from Metroid

"Town Theme" from Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

ive found it, the ugly short hair era

— @gratercheese905

"Game Select" from Super Mario All-Stars

"Athletic Theme" from Super Mario World

2:06 that part he looks up, according to A.I. has some thing to do with "How to get the Pegasus Boots", the "Thief" sitch, The Walrus problem, the Eagle's Tower Puz and the Plot Twist.

— @stefanspelt3578

"Mystic Cave Zone" from Sonic the Hedgehog 2

"Fun House" from Mickey Mousecapade

“Video games are easily the quickest way to realize that I’m a fucking genius."

Said like a true gamer.

— @slifer2

"Title" from Tetris DS

"Cool, Cool Mountain" from Super Mario 64

The Zeld BotW Strategy guide actually helped me when I was 12 trying to beat the dungeons, I still love to read it it makes me really nostalgic

— @djstarma2009

"Seaside Hill (Classic)" from Sonic Generations

"Techno de Chocobo" from Final Fantasy VI

I’ve 101% DK64 three times now, and used the official guide book to find all the coloured bananas, because having the locations conveniently laid out on one map is much better than skipping through a walkthrough video that gets all of them

— @RadTroppy

"Door Into Summer" from Knuckles' Chaotix

"Breakout" from 3D Dot Game Heroes

0:20 My guess is that he was playing a game with an opening cutscene that let you skip it with one button, that’s why.

It weird I had the obe for final fantasy but didn't own the game my das bought it but I don't know why

@pietzychannel

While i do enjoy collecting these things, at this point, they're more for people who are already fans of the game and dont need the help. Plus with DLC and frequent online updates, they can become out of date within a month of the game's release

@redlegRally

Something I think they could've done to stay relevant once online walk-throughs came into the picture, was to help more players by pointing them in the direction of an online video and / or guide that may be more suited to their learning style. Describing things just in words may be helpful to most, but I think offering a supplemental, more visual option, could've allowed both mediums to coexist longer than they did. In full disclosure, this may be something that just wasn't possible at the time, and I've just been talking out my ass the whole time, but, I thought I'd share anyway.

I played the E.T. Atari game recently because I was at a retro game party on campus and someone brought their Atari with a bunch of games, including E.T.

Even though I was told the objective I kept. Falling down. The holes. After getting out it brought me back down again! It was nuts 😭

Earthbound didn’t even get a section in a Nintendo power, IT GOT ITS OWN STRATEGY GUIDE

@UnspecifiedKirbyFan
@

And the kirby 64 strategy is actually super helpful and tells you how to get the true ending, without spoiling it

@UnspecifiedKirbyFan

The earthbound strategy guide is basically necessary

The biggest problem with the FFIX guide was that, back when it was published in 2001, only around 50% of households in the U.S. even had Internet access. The same went for Japan -- home Internet access sat at roughly 50%. A lot of European countries had an access rate of only 35%. Elsewhere, it was even lower. Still, even if you had Internet access, loading times were painfully slow back then and a lot of websites (even professionally-made ones) were poorly designed and awkward to navigate. Honestly, in the early 2000s, a print guide would have been quicker and easier to use than an online one.

9:13 Ooo! I had that one! I had several of the "How to Win at Video Games" paperback strategy guides as well. I know I purchased at least one of them at one of those old Scholastic book fairs that schools used to have snd sell books like The Magic School Bus series, the Wayside School series, Goosebumps books, and Mad Libs activities books, amongst others. Does this date me? Do they still have those Scholastic book fairs? Or does the fact that I'm writing a post to a 4 year old YouTube video make my age readily apparent? How did I get in this Wendy's?

Had the super Mario bros 3 guidebook that game with the gba and game. Showed you literally everything from every level. Sickest thing I ever received for Christmas

Connection terminated.
I'm sorry to interrupt you, Elizabeth.
If you still even remember that name.
But I'm afraid you've been misinformed.
You are not here to receive a gift.
Nor, have you been called here by the individual you assume.
Although, you have indeed been called.

You have all been called here.
Into a labyrinth of sounds and smells, misdirection and misfortune.
A labyrinth with no exit, a maze with no prize.
You don't even realize that you are trapped.
Your lust of blood has driven you in endless circles, chasing the cries of children in some unseen chamber, always seeming so near, yet somehow out of reach, but you will never find them. None of you will. This is where your story ends. And to you, my brave volunteer, who somehow found this job listing not intended for you, although there was a way out planned for you, I have a feeling that's not what you want. I have a feeling that you are right where you want to be. I am remaining as well. I am nearby. This place will not be remembered, and the memory of everything that started this can finally begin to fade away. As the agony of every tragedy should. And to you monsters trapped in the corridors, be still and give up your spirits. They don't belong to you. For most of you, I believe there is peace and perhaps more waiting for you after the smoke clears. Although, for one of you, the darkest pit of Hell has opened to swallow you whole, so don't keep the devil waiting, old friend. My daughter, if you can hear me, I knew you would return as well. It's in your nature to protect the innocent. I'm sorry that on that day, the day you were shut out and left to die, no one was there to lift you up into their arms the way you lifted others into yours, and then, what became of you. I should have known you wouldn't be content to disappear, not my daughter. I couldn't save you then, so let me save you now. It's time to rest - for you, and for those you have carried in your arms. This ends for all of us. End communication.

Reading the Final Fantasy III Player's Guide in the store, which I went back to repeatedly until I could afford it and treated it like a novel, was what got me into the game itself, which I only got later. And that opened the door for so many other games that would become my favorites that continued to entertain me for decades. So thanks, player's guide!

@rog4real

They’ve always been more of a novel to me. Like when I was a kid playing my n64. The Mario 64, rouge squadron, golden eye books really helped

3:56 I watched a documentary awhile ago where the interviewee was a nintendo hotline worker who was basically hired off the street and given no guidance or guides on anything. Of course if you think about it, if your business model revolves around maximizing time on the phone, hiring incompetant people actually makes a lot of sense

@MadChickenPictures
@

Strategie guide is something l always loved, even to this day. It’s not the walkthrough for me because i never used it, it was about seeing the fun facts, the maps, the monsters bestiary, stats of weapons or armor , etc. For me, a good game guide was the ones that showed you those kinds of things than just a walkthrough. I still collect some guides for fun, especially for the zelda games.

Yes, yes it is. Adventure is easy to figure out and is actually, you know, fun.

I’ve had so many strategy guides throughout my childhood, and still have quite a few of them in storage. Heck, I’ve read through a few of them so many times that the spines broke, but I still held onto the pages.
