The Rules of Basque Pelota (Mano, Paleta & Chistera) - EXPLAINED!
Video Overview & Insights
Ninh explains – The Rules of Basque Pelota. One of the oldest sports in the world, it’s contested in many different variations, but the format of the rules is generally the same. Most of the time, it’s played similarly to Gaelic Handball, American Handball and Jai Alai (Cesta Punta) and is played professionally in the Basque region of France and Spain.
FOOTNOTES:
- I'd appreciate if someone here could share this video on Reddit (probably on The Ocho page). I think I've been shadowbanned?!
- The game itself is easy to understand (like my Jai Alai video). There are some cool variations of this game, but what makes it difficult is the sheer amount of variations.
- I think the FIPV might want to standardise some of these games, but having said that - these are some of the oldest sports currently still being played. So who am I to say?!
- For any whiny bitches that will no doubt try and 'correct me', I'm fully aware that the 'Basque Country' is not an actual country - but an autonomous region of Spain and part of France. When talking about 'Spain' and 'France', I'm referring to the areas that aren't covered by the 'Basque Country'.
Specific to International Basque Pelota Rules - watch this short beginner’s tutorial video guide on how Basque Pelota is played, Basque Pelota rules and guidelines, and how to play pilota.

Xare is not popular in Uruguay. Make a double check in you information. In fact I see xares as exhibition ítem in old clubs of pelota.

The Basque Pelota court I know of in Jordan Valley, Oregon only has 2 walls, both crazy high. I had to come here to see what the game actually looks like. The huge stone court stands out in the tiny desert town that had a lot of Basque settlers apparently. If you go there watch out for paper wasps or whatever they are called, they have nests all over around the court.

The issue of pain is real, and it was a shock the first time I tried it. I started playing frontenis around age eight, and over time I played almost every racket sport there is, as well as the different versions of pelota. When I went to university in Mexico City, everyone played barehanded, i tried it, but it hurt so much I wanted to leave, but the guys on the court wouldn't let me. I came home in pain, my hands looking like Mickey Mouse hands. It took me months to stop being afraid of the pain before each shot and to learn which parts of my hand to use to hit without hurting myself. It's a difficult feeling to describe, but I can say it feels like hitting a red-hot metal ball. It's very difficult to execute a shot when your entire nervous system is literally telling you not to, but at the same time, it's beautiful. If you learn to do it right, you don't hurt yourself, even though it hurts a lot, and you can use your hands normally afterward.

@therobloxman4266Fantastic video. Well done and thanks.
@cmjones83I didnt know that there is a sport that outright requires the players to deflect a hundred miles fast and hard af balls with BARE HANDS. If that does not earn the title of badass, I don't know what is.
@paperclip9558Very well narrated and easily understood, if you read this and like skilled sports ,have look at irish ,"hurling" it can only be described as f...... m...al you wont be dissappointed
@trowelstoneIve heard this was an demonstration sport in the Barcelona 1992 olympics! they used the one with the glove baskets i believe
@itsnathan9131What a carry on.

@michaelperry6376Great explanation, the background music though... It should've been Basque folklore, not Spanish.
@hearthhue369It looks very similar to Gaelic Handball and Racketball, Paddleball and the others you mentioned
@MR-er5woCesta Punta maybe used for hunting as well
@pveraeternvs3777my family is good friends with a gentleman and his family, who is in the jai lai hall of fame, Urchiaga.

@michaelperry6376About twenty years ago I watched an evening of pelota when my family and I stayed in Bidart in the French Basque region. I think it was the Gran Cistera version with curved baskets and a very long court. It was extremely entertaining and it turned out the guy who served us at the local resterant was an international player.

@michaelperry6376What are the differences between jai alai and basque pelota
@AdjustablesidetableFlamenco in the músic??? Seriously?? This is a basque sport... Not spanish.
@JonuraHombre, no pongas música flamenca en un video sobre pelota vasca. Es como poner música china en un vídeo sobre Texas.
@txubaka4094Thank you for doing this. You're on to something explaining the odd sports out there that the general public is not familiar with, and you do a great job at explaining it. Keep up the great work my friend.
@michaelperry6376At this point figure skating could be called a variation of this thing...
@fivetimesyoLive Jai alai https://youtu.be/QnAp5svNAhc
@michaelperry6376Nice video. But why did you put Andalusian music? Lol. We are in the other side of the peninsula with a completely different culture.
@ander1052Sadly Jai-Alai is no longer played in the Philippines due to illegal gambling... though it has been reopened but few participates.
