The Music Industry Is Breaking

Please TMA address an elephant in the room. I.E original songs upload to make a 'cover' of our IP via the likes of Suno. I venture to suggest, many pro musicians are taking this approach. Where does our IP land when we produce a cover of our own song/tune via AI?

Hello. Ive been listening to music for over 40 years and from where I'm listening (and a large portion of music listeners) it broke down in the 90s somewhere. There are a variety of factors - mostly people dont learn music anymore - playing instruments, music theory, music education but also incentives have changed , motivation (why do it), and finally, the people running the music industry don't care about music. Channels of music delivery and promotion (ubiquity) has also destroyed it.

Sorry, I kind of think it's a red herring to say that AI is "stealing" music when it is being trained. It's doing the same thing that people do... taking in a lot of content and regurgitating many of the same elements. This is starting to sound like rhetoric to me.

My eyes roll at the panic I'm seeing. I listen to AI music on my home system when I need some background music... so yeah, maybe AI is putting a certain amount of Muzak musicians out of business. Whatever. I would never buy an AI song or album, or go to an AI ocncert. AI writes LOTS of music, but it just isn't EVER going to be as good or as cool or as compelling as a human band can be. It's just won't. You all need to stop freaking out, AI is a just tool. It isn't stealing YOUR music. That I-IV-V diddy that you 'wrote'. LOL, guitarists are so outraged when companies 'borrow' the Fender Stratocaster body shape, and Fender sues them. "How can they do that? That's AWFUL". Yet, even the NOTION that AI might be training on published music has all of you running around like you hair is on fire. Do you not see the hypocrisy? Jesus people, it's gonna be OK.

I refuse to listen to AI music. If it is not a band I can actually buy a ticket, or would have been able to in the past, I simply don’t listen. It’s not artificial intelligence- that is just a good marketing label. It’s machine learning. It has good uses, but it cannot replace actual intelligence. (At least not yet. A chimp brain has billions of neurons with multiple connections on each one. Maybe a quantum based machine in decades from now will be there.)

AI music cannot be copyrighted at this point as I understand it. So openly steal it.

For most of my life I searched for the right way to manifest, without success. Then I came across Vera Hart's archetype quiz. Out of curiosity I filled it in, and the result hit the core of who I am. I've approached things very differently ever since. A recommendation for anyone who feels stuck.

Wouldn't surprise me if the US courts land on a decision that training an AI is fair use (transformative) but that using that AI to generate competing output is not (affect on market). But different territories have different copyright rules and exemptions to really it's anyone's guess.

If you are a professional recording artist, do what you do, sell your music and performances and stop whining about AI. It is well known so called professionals have been using AI to aid them in song writing and music production for years. That is why so much of today's music sounds the same. Now that this technology is available to the general population, they are not happy about what affect this will have on the future of their careers. That goes for the music industry as a whole. As the saying goes, a thief trusts no one. I say that because artists have been stealing and mimicking other peoples work for decades, in part or whole. The only thing new about it is the technology that's made it much easier.

I would argue that real artist use other real artist as reference it’s a standard thing in real music so it should be struck down in court. That would give everyone the right to sue each other if you’re song sounds like someone else

Knowing everything I know, I think it's just nuts to ever consider releasing my original music now. Makes no sense to me. My fans now are just random new people hearing me live for the first time. If they like me enough, my band, etc, then they'll buy merch. They won't find my originals on streaming platforms but that is 100% fine by me!!

Yo, I just went 2 court. Got problems with WestSideBoogie Because of it. Because they put me on some Britney Case. I Asked for a lawyer, she don’t want to give me one. The Judge eventually said I was right. And I always have the right for a lawyer. Now they gave me a lawyer who is on vacation. But the trail continues .

In my opinion most artists sound exactly alike these days anyway. Just pick a genre and everything new in the genre sounds pretty much the same. Take pop music for example, every darn female artist sounds exactly the same. Country music, which is not even country music anymore, sounds exactly the same. These so called artists are stealing and mimicking other artists because they think by doing so they will become or remain successful. There is no originality in music creation, it doesn't exist anymore, there are no standouts and no originals. It's like they too are modeling their so called original music with AI themselves. One thing for sure, if AI steals their livelihoods (which is what they are actually worried about), we won't have to listen to them screaming and shouting at us from their soapboxes on who to vote for, and how we should think, because they won't have a soapbox to stand on. So if these so called professional artists fall to the wayside, perhaps we can get back to making real music, in our pubs, local parks and amphitheaters with real artists who only care about making real art. Instead of those who think they are untouchable and now charging nearly a thousand dollars per concert ticket to attend a performance. The crap that comes out of my FM radio these days isn't even tolerable, it's just a bunch of noise with no human element, no emotion, no real creativity. Music of yesteryear that held these same elements to high standard are so played out because there is hardly anything new worth tuning into.

Du meinst also, wenn ich das richtig verstanden habe, dass KI keine direkte 1 zu 1 Kopie von einem Song herstellt, aber, was für dich logisch identisch ist, wenn man ALLE Trainingsdaten quasi als einen Meta-Song begreifen würde, es dann schon eine identische 1 zu 1 Kopie sein würde, weil man sich ja aus den gesamten Daten des Meta-Songs bedient.
Logisch stimmt es, aber es bleibt dann IMMER NOCH die Frage der rechtlichen Legitimität über, und die wurde bisher mit der"Fairen-Nutzungs-Regel" beantwortet. Da ich Suno nutze, sollte es so bleiben, aber es sollte Begrenzungen der KI-Veröffentlichung geben, so maximal 10 Songs pro Monat, pro Person, das wäre dann auch fair.

I don’t think it’s breaking, I think they are trying to come up with ways not to pay people , because a stream, is a stream , is a stream, it should to matter if it’s full ai, half ai, …..it’s still a stream, people are fans, they listen they buy .

As someone who has been a performer, recording artist, and DJ myself, in additional to being a huge music fan and collector since I was a young child, I can tell you this! Based on all my years of experience, I've come to the conclusion that most people just want to be entertained. They just want to hear music that they enjoy, and that they can dance to and since along to, and they just want to have a good time and a positive experience. And as time goes by, nostalgia also becomes very important, and they want to hear music that brings back memories. People generally don't care very much about all the things that you might logically think music fans should or would care about! It's very unfortunate, but audiences really don't care that much about musical or vocal talent, how real or genuine the music is, how authentic a performance is, whether or not auto-tune or pitch correction was used, whether or not a song featured live musicians, or ANYTHING else along those lines. In many cases, they don't even care very much if an entire band or group is fired, and replaced by a whole new lineup of members performing under the same name as the original, or if they are all replaced by A.I. People simply want to hear music that they personally like, and that makes them feel good. I'm not trying to justify anything, and I'm not trying to complain about anything. I'm just saying that in my own experience, that's basically how it is!

Why not let the consumers decide? There's alot of AI music that i rather listen to than human....

10k listeners per month? That's huge. I'm a human musician and creator, I've got 50 on a good month.

What is even the point anymore? There's so much content out there. Every day there's something new. Every day we are bombarded with endless media. Who cares about my music? Who cares about your music? Anything you put out will probably just get stolen and fed to AI anyway. Am I being to pessimistic? Or am I just being realistic? Ever since 2020, it seems the world has gone to shit, and it's never been the same.
