In the 60's schools closed for 2 weeks in October so the students could help in the potato harvest in East Idaho. That was how we made our spending money for the rest of the year. Harvesters at that time had a catwalk on the back where girls stood for hours in the sun, cold wind and blowing dirt picking vines, clods and rocks from a conveyor belt. What a miserable job! I had a better job: driving truck. Daylight to dark hauling spuds from the field to the cellar.

@tpo6142Noob question here but why does the harvesting happen in two steps? It seems like it is the same or at least similar machine that digs up the potatoes and throws in a row and then the machine that picks up the rows and dumps in truck.
@johnnybravo964i plant red potatoes next to white potatoes and the white ones are great and the red ones get deformed ...any idea why... your input would be greatly appreceated

One question, why do the transfer conveyor belts droop so much on the harvester? Is there a purpose?
its amazing how far farming as advanced.. wasnt long ago our species was doing all this with bare hands, hand tools and animals. also potatoes didnt start becoming a staple in european diet until the 18th century.. before that i believe it was just a south American produced thing.. cant imagine harvesting like 23 tons of potatoes by hand or with a horse. on a todays fields.

I would like to see the numbers and how these potatoes get to market. In the future, please go into more detail on what a potato is, how it grows and what it looks like in the plant form.
@BlindnikoWhat is the purpose of the disc at the front of the harvester? How many pounds of potatoes does a truck average. How many truck loads of potatoes do you average daily during harvest. How many trucks are you running each day. You guys do videos that are super informative. Thanks for doing this.

@CindyVBergBrought back a lot of memories. The first time I seen potatoe digging. I.was. about five years old They dug one row at time. Bagged. Them in burlap bags. You run the potatoes through A lot of conveyers. Last time I worked with potatoes they were baking or roasting them then freezing them.

@struckyncI'm curious. When after harvest, do you ever allow area people onto the fields to pick up any potatoes left? A shame to let any leftovers to rot. I live in Wisconsin and would love to go out onto the fields to pick up any left over potatoes. This year I tried growing my own and was surprised on how many I got.

@RedDawn-08xI grew up out in wheat and milo country. I've never seen potato harvest before. Very interesting. I'm curious about the dirt and vines collected during the unloading and storing process. Is that brought back to the field that it came from?
