In this video, I break down the exact method I used to learn a new language and how you can use it to reach fluency in any language faster than you think. Whether you're a beginner or stuck at an intermediate plateau, this approach works.

👋 Who am I?

I think that is also how english just spawned into our heads as non english speakers

I'm Spencer. I went from zero to conversational Mandarin in under a year using comprehensible input after struggling with traditional methods for a decade. Now I help other people do the same thing through Fluency Formula — a structured path to conversational fluency in any language. No textbooks, no grammar drills. Just the methods that actually work.

i agree with this method. but i do encourage learning a few fundamental words or phrases like the top 50 most used words per language first. can be done is less than a week but can speed up results

I've started learning Greek and Korean. I have a basic understanding of Greek but would like to improve my Korean. One thing I'm not sure about from the video is whether I should have english subtitles on the videos or shows that I'm watching while trying to learn. Should I or should I not?
(I can also read both the Korean and Greek alphabets.)

Any potential fellow gamers, take the plunge and change your console or PC to your target language, 90% of games you play will automatically switch to that language, matching subtitles and all. Play a game you're deeply familiar with and happy to replay.

Think about it. They're repetitive. Characters only have so many lines that often get repeated in very specific gameplay scenarios. Also, nearly everything is visual and comprehensible. I'm playing Far Cry 5 in German right now, and "Beschütze die Zivilisten" suddenly makes a whole lot more sense when a character points towards a bunch of civilians that need protecting. It's even more engaging than TV so I gotta think that neurologically, your language center is working even harder.

English is not my native language but I've always been able to speak it ever since I could talk as a kid and I actually learned it by accident when all I would watch was english videos. This video really cemented that you could actually learn a language just by watching and getting visual cues cause that was also how I learned english at such a young age. Now the struggle is just trying to do it again for a different language..

Absolutely not

Obviously, this is all a spoof: the solution to learning is the hat. He never takes it off. ;-)

Seriously, though, the "silent method" of language learning recognised the importance of withholding pronunciation, and it's important for language communities that value pronunciation (e.g. Gaelic or French) and for language communities that are very different from the starting language(s). Most speakers in such communities instinctively react adversely to poor pronunciation. That isn't due to the learner: it's due to poorly devised teaching methods.

Hey! I'm working on learning Portuguese. If there are any speakers in here, I would love to hear any shows or content you would recommend to a beginner. I have lots to learn, but all these comments are giving me hope that this method could be the one.

Just learn like a baby. Copy and paste and repeat so long until you get it. xD (not literally haha.)
But for real. In my opinion, there are no lazy ways. You should learn the way you can learn the best.

I used to watch german channels as a kid, at least 2 hours a day, as a teenager I could understand german, as an adult I learned to speak as well now I am fluent. It is way easier to learn as a kid but I will try to do this with swedish as well.

I am a native portuguese speaker, and the biggest reason I'm fluent in english is because I landed on the "lazy method" by accident and lucky timing. It was mid 2000s, me and my friends wanted to watch some shows really badly, however, it would take a whole year for the dubbed version to air in our country, the way to watch it right away was downloading the original english version, and because of how internet was back then, we would have to wait days for subtitles... might sound silly but I'm talking about a bunch of impatient kids. We started watching in english dub without subtitles anyway, but I remember how ridiculously quickly we learned... also, kids' shows can provide a "clearer voice" as well as a simple vocabulary, it is def a great starting point.

You'll most definitely never see this, but does the watching TV method also help with reading and writing because I'm learning Korean and my main goal is to read and write, then talk and listen.

I think this video is pretty helpful but my problem is I used duolingo for like 3 years to learn italian i dont remember any of it i want to learn French and Russian at the same time (I might start off with French because Russian is harder.) but I see people saying to do this to do that I havent started yet but i dont know many French words would you still recommend me doing the basic stuff like learning the alphabet and stuff like that then using this method? It is similar to art people have different ways of learning/studying a specific thing so I wanna find out what method is best for me but its kinda hard

@Moonlightprospect

Too bad you dont actually speak any Mandarin in the video so we can actually know your method works..

Question! I just started learning a language, so I don't have much I can watch that I will know about 80% of, what do I do? Can I still watch videos and shows and learn things from them? I know I will learn a bit, but can I start this way, or do I have to start some other way and do this way after I know some stuff?

@AylaSchwahn

I’ve got to give this a try. I like to sing, and I’ve been singing along to songs in German on YouTube for a long time now. And I can say for sure that I’ve… Not learned that much German. I have however gotten decent at speaking German, my problem is I don’t know what I’m saying or how to construct sentences. This could be a solution to a problem people might have when using this method. They watch and learn the language through media, but with little to no active speaking practice, they might have trouble with talking. However, just spend a little time singing songs, and thy should help with pronunciations and sentence structure as well.

I live in the Philippines. I grew up watching Barney, Little Mermaid, Sesame Street, Blue's Clues, Hi-5, Art Attack, Dora the Explorer, etc. I mainly watch English kid shows and so I became more comfortable hearing/listening to it (even today) than Filipino/Tagalog. I much prefer English sermons at church than my own native tongue.
