Have you ever wondered who were the last players of NHL teams that were no longer in the league? I was able to look at 9 defunct NHL teams that no longer exists in the nhl and find who were the last players of each team and how long their careers lasted. All of them had amazingly long careers and there are a few surprises to be found about these players!

Winnipeg is in Manitoba, not Alberta; the original Jets may have had problems, but being "the third team" in a province dominated by the Flames and Oilers wasn't among them.

I'm a Montreal Canadiens' fan and although it makes me feel old to say this. you young folks really missed something special when the Hartford Whalers moved. That building was special and there was always a unique atmosphere there, no matter what time of year a game was taking place. But in the playoffs, wow! That was as loud a building as I have EVER heard in my life. I really miss those days!

The North Stars were plagued with attendance problems long before they moved to Dallas. My grandfather & my dad had season tickets for the Northstars their first 19 seasons. In the late 70s, the attendance was so bad that they almost folded. Instead, as you pointed out with the Barons, they merged with Cleveland. In the late 80s & into the end of the 90-91 season, attendance was also horrendous. The Gund Bros., who had owned the Barons & took control of the Northstars after their merger, where getting no help from the Metropolitan Sports Commission, who fleeces ownership of the Met Center from the original owners of the stars, with renovations to the Met Center and horrible management by Lou Nanne, they almost moved the Northstars to San Jose after the 89-90 season. Channel 5 News & the Star Tribune did a poll asking people if they cared if the North Stars would leave the Twin Cites....over 60% said no, they didn't care.
The league did a deal with the Gund Bros. Giving them the San Jose market as an expansion team and take some North Stars player & prospects, thus de-merging the teams.
With the North stars run to the finals in 90-91, plus a season ticket promo that season, something like buy 2 season tickets get 1 free for the remainder of that season plus the next season, attendance spiked. But when the promo ended and you'd now have to pay for the free ticket, and the team went back to it's losing ways, attendance plummeted again until Norm Green was allowed to move the team to Dallas. Once he announced that the team sold out their few remaining home games.

@michaelleroy9281Fun Fact: Mark Messier was the last member of the WHA to retire from the NHL. He began his career with the Indianapolis Racers in 1978(the same team Gretzky played for) then the Cincinnati Stingers before being drafted to the Oilers when the WHA and NHL merged. Mess retired in 2004.
@Rockhound6165Additional odd fact about Kent Nilsson; when the Atlanta Flames originally drafted him, they announced the wrong name; he was drafted as Torbjorn Nilsson who was, in fact, a soccer player. The Flames then drafted Kent Nilsson the next year using the correct name but had to draft him earlier. Watch "Kent Nilsson crossbar challenge" where a reporter put him on the spot during warm up and Kent scooped 5 pucks onto the ice near the blue line and proceeded to hit the crossbar with the first shot to the amazement of all, hanging his head and smiling sheepishly... a legend made BULLETPROOF!

@sdgakatbkMike Craig is actually the last Minnesota North Stars player but he did spend most of his career in Europe. He retired in 2013

@idontgivetkachukAs a person in New York and having two teams within driving distance (the Islanders and the Rangers) I can't imagine not having a team nearby as a hockey fan or even worse, losing the team altogether.

Bring back the Oakland Seals. As a kid they never televised any west coast games on TV. The Seals were like a mystery.

Defunct means no longer active.
There are still some active teams.
The Rockies became the Devils.
The Nordiques became the Avalanche.
The North Stars became the Stars.
The Jets became the Coyotes.
The Whalers became the Hurricanes.
I was born and raised in Calgary. All my pals and I FREAKED OUT with joy when we got the Flames! I think it was summer of '79. I had an uncle take me to a ton of games in those days. We thought we had died and gone to heaven....."WE ARE IN THE BIG LEAGUES!!" I met Kent Nilsson one day, he came into the high-end stereo shop I worked in, I'm going to guess 1981. What I remember was how soft spoken and down to earth he was. He had no snooty airs about him at all. He was a beautiful player, so very skilled, but he didnt like the rough stuff, that's for sure. Fun trip down memory lane, thank you.

@GlobalVeteranStoriesThose team weren't defunct. They were relocated. Defunct teams stopped operating and folded. They ceased to exist after that.. Defunct and relocation are two different things.
@dinodenver1408Man, imagine the chances of the Jets in the 90's if (other than actually staying in Winnipeg) they retained Doan, Selanne, Tkachuk, Zhamnov, Khabibulin, Numminen, et al? Secondly, the Flames were not "always better" than the Jets. The Jets beat the Flames 2-1 in the 80's playoffs (85 & 87 wins with a loss in 86) Moreover, I believe following the 85 season the Jets won the majority of the regular season games the next three years. Obviously in 89 the Flames were outstanding. And finally before seeing the next video, I believe the last Thrashers players are Blake Wheeler, Andrew Ladd, Evander Kane and Zach Bogosian.
