Its a very tragic story, this is a tribute to Ray Davies sister, Rene. On his13th birthday she gifted him a spanish guitar before going out to dance -where she tragically passed away from a heart attack on the dance floor in June of 1957. This song is a very special tribute to a lost loved one and contributed to his extreme success from being able to draw from that tragedy to power his music.

Lyrics:
β€one of my many favorites
They put a parking lot on a piece of land
Where the supermarket used to stand
Ray looks like flash Harry in original st Trinian movies
Before that, they put up a bowling alley
On the site that used to be the local palais
the first record I bought
That's where the big bands used to come and play
My sister went there on a Saturday
Talented!
Come dancing
All her boyfriends used to come and call
Fuck this annoying ass song
Why not come dancing?
It's only natural
sounds like beach boys surfinβ usa
Another Saturday, another date
She would be ready, but she'd always make him wait
CUUUANTOS RECUERDOS
In the hallway, in anticipation
He didn't know the night would end up in frustration
Dancing to big Bands back in the day must have been must have been awesome.
He'd end up blowing all his wages for the week
All for a cuddle and a peck on the cheek
Only rediscovered this after not hear it for at least 40 years. Absolute amazing song
Come dancing
That's how they did it when I was just a kid
Every time I see this video I wonder if they made two separate videos at two different times then spliced them together because Ray's hair - It's fairly long when he is on stage but noticeably quite a bit shorter when he is the cad in pinstriped suit. I'm fairly certain he's not wearing a skull cap with his long hair tucked underneath.π€
And when they said "come dancing"
My sister always did
β€β€β€β€
My sister should have come in a midnight
And my mom would always sit up and wait
Go watch The musical brilliant!
It always ended up in a big row
When my sister used to get home late
I'm not sure I like the newest version with revised lyrics - now there's a mosque where the church used to stand, now it's where all the Muslims come and meet, they always point and scream at me, nothing but burkas as far as the eye can see, I hope my sister didn't get abducted oh gee, and now they notice me and are coming for me, with pointy knives in their hands that's my cue to flee, I'll be dead before midnight if I don't get away
Out of my window I could see them in the moonlight
Two silhouettes saying good night by the garden gate
2026
What are you doing out there? Come on, you're gonna be out there all night?
The day they knocked down the palais
First time I listen to this song was in August or September of 1983, later I saw the video, brings back great memories. I was 20 at the time. Still love it now in 2026.
My sister stood and cried
The day they knocked down the palais
Love his expressions in this video, so cute & funny. π
Part of my childhood died, just died
Now I'm grown up and playing in a band
Waterloo sunset classic
And there's a car park where the palais used to stand
My sister's married and she lives on an estate
Love the kinks favourite song
Her daughters go out, now it's her turn to wait
She knows they get away with things she never could
Come dancing come dancing come dancing best song off all times.
But if I asked her I wonder if she would
Come dancing
You need to reintroduce real music to young people again through talented musicians like Julianna Wilson who can play & write. Otherwise you'll take it with you.
Come on sister, have yourself a ball
Don't be afraid to come dancing
I'm 76 and I'm still listening to this great track! Just love the Kinks, and I always have - along with Waterloo Sunset! β€β€β€β€
It's only natural
Come dancing
Great car chase rhythm!

And all your friends would come dancing
Im 58 and my brother introduced me to Cars in the early 80's. Still some of my favorite tunes. Life was so much sweeter then, wasnt it?
While the big bands used to play
Literally the theme song for my teen years

@karstenlange7613My favorite Kinks song and definitely a top 7 favorite all time song
@Bill09_1For some reason this song popped into my head today. I loved the kinks back in the seventies, and I loved swing and ballroom dance back in the eighties and nineties. What a great song!
@the.holistic.dentistremember first hearing this song back then and remember thinking the song was pure ' art' and genius. Ray Davies is an english legend one of our top musical talents.
@ravenhill_of_Old_kent_1968Good driving music, to keep me awake, and was so cool in the punk rock clubs to dance to, heh, literally.. .ππ

@Peter-k4b4mIf only he knew how many parking lots there were about to be, yet there's never enough parking.
@WildcardArtsEntertainmentI'm 79. This song always brings me to tears. What a tribute to his sister!
