Forget betting on the Kentucky Derby, the real money is in horse breeding. It's a $39 billion industry where pedigree and lineage are key.
Studs like Tapit can't do anything without MARES. If you invest in a stud and he makes it you hit the lottery, but if he fails you lost it all. If you invest in a nice MARE with a decent pedigree and race record, you can breed her to any stud you can afford (like Tapit when he was standing for $15K) and the weanling, yearling, 2 year old in training, etc sales give you an immediate way to make cash, or you can keep the horses you produce for yourself. Studs are not the only way to make money in the breeding business.
