In this new History Hit series Mike Loades embarks on a hands-on exploration into the amazing history of dogs - from giant Newfoundlands to skilled sheep dogs, delightful chamber dogs to resilient carriage dogs. It’s a fascinating story of how humans and dogs have lived and worked together for thousands of years - and in each period certain dogs stand out.
In the first episode Mike follows the pawprints of history back to Tudor times, an era when you could find dogs both on the hunt and in the laps of courtiers. With his active approach to history, and using an original Tudor dog manual, Mike tracks down a fugitive with bloodhounds (just as the Earl of Essex did in Ireland), he uses poodles to retrieve crossbow bolts from a lake, tests a spaniel ‘on point’ with a gosshawk and discovers the sad tale of Anne Boleyn’s pet dog, Purkoy.

In the second episode, Dogs in the Age of Revolutions. Mike opens a window on a fascinating era of great change in society, agriculture and industry. Mike works with the sheep dogs that helped drive animals in the agricultural revolution; the giant Newfoundlands that supported the fisheries of the New World; the foxhounds and lap dogs of the upper classes and the coach dogs that kept high speed transport safe.
Famous humans in this narrative include George Washington and the Empress Josephine, but it is the dogs that take centre stage as Mike herds, rides and is even rescued by them, bringing his canine knowledge to their remarkable story.
I really enjoyed this series about Dogs in History. I have Dobermanns & I would love to see their origin & use covered by this channel. I just love the host and his enthusiasm for all of the dog breeds. I got my Dobermanns for security, of course but they also excel at Tracking/Hunting, Companionship and Service Dog tasks.

I smiled through the whole thing. This guy gives me steve erwin energy the way he genuinely gets so excited tk teach us about dogs. It's really heartwarming. Makes learning fun and digestable. It also helps to have a distingushed gentlemenly accent. As a Dalmatian owner it is so cool seeing my dog get some attention!

Mike was a teacher I had for stage combat class at a Shakespeare conservatory in London in 2001. His knowledge and passion are infectious. I have really enjoyed watching him through the years demonstrating a host of skills from archery on horseback to the dogs i watched today. Much love his way!

@yourpalvee"Poodles were also powled and knotted, that is shaved and clipped" Powled (pulled) and knotted actually refers to the corded coat style.
Corded coats look like doggy dreadlocks and are still used for poodles, pulis, komondors, etc, today.
Poodles were duck hunters? I had no idea! Almost everyone in my family raised hunting dogs. I had never heard that

@trinaroen8011Been doing laundry while listening to this. 3 pugs and a corgi/mini aussie mix followed me every where i went. Except when the kids were outside for a minute. Then the big boy and one of the pugs barked at the window for a few minutes 😂😂

My border collie who's yet to meet a real sheep went bonkers hearing the sheep abd shepherds whistles on this video 😂, its amazing he somehow knows . We are working on getting him some sheep , just need fences up.

@Emz351I've had a red-nosed Pit bull for almost a year now, and I just found out they usually cost up to 2K but can go for up to 11K... I found mine on the side of the road, and I love him so much.

@green-eyed-wildchildI think what they refered to by ''Powled and notted'' is the cording process. I know poodles were cared for by Demoiselle in France for clips, but they were often be kept in cords. This happed natuary over time by letting the hair grow and get somewhat matted, and than spliting those knots into cords. At one point corded poodles where even considered a variety on it own.
