The Hunt for a New Kind of Magnet to Power the Future | Bloomberg Primer

Video Overview & Insights

Scientists are developing ever-more powerful magnets to enable clean energy sources like fusion. But China’s dominance of the supply chain for rare-earth magnets threatens their global availability.

Congrats to the Emmy.. well done 🎉🎉🎉

Magnets also can be used in future space colony for space centrifugal force for gravity force theoretically (The Maglev Bearing System). Hopefully we can find more in other planets and better ones in Earth.

European leaders are so pathetic. They keep calling China "an enemy", they keep restricting technology to China, they keep sanctioning China and then they cry when China dominates an industry.

8:10-12:48 Niron Magnetics

@7:57 the reason everyone is behind China is because
1, you just said it'll take a decade to get up and running, china it'll be a few months
2, you just had 2 guys casually strolling towards a billion dollar mine, not a worker in sight and not a rush in the world.

China gets things done, the rest of the world thinks about everything that could go wrong and nit picks with h&s 😂 China just smashest it out and figures it as they go 😂

Great video. Plasma will produce its own magnetic field giving the right conditions known as a field reverse configuration. Aneutronic fusion in a field reverse configuration is the way.

Maybe if the iron nitride had toughness it would hold its magnetism under all conditions. Vanadium added to the iron nitride maybe the solution. Also forging may help.

Totally fake. There is no neutrino density in these machines. Neutrinos don't add to the reaction but conducts heat of fusion. Unless its pulsed collision where neutrinos don't have time to escape, this kind of fusion cannot work.

Nuclear fusion energy experiments began in 1958 and has involved well over 150 experimental machines since then. Only a few of the machines have ever demonstrated the generation of more than 1.0 watt-hour of fusion energy. Even the best record holding experimental shots remain many orders of magnitude away from the holy grail goal of an economically practical power plant design. None of the experimental efforts have generated anything close to producing more fusion energy than the input energy required to power the facilities.

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS)’s SPARC experimental machine high temperature superconducting magnets will be operated at 8 and 15 Kelvin. The high field intensity will not solve all the remaining fusion energy problems that plasma physics scientists and engineers have been struggling with in recent years.

This technical field has been loaded with extreme sales hype for many decades. One common claim has been that the hydrogen fuel is almost limitless. The promoters often avoid mentioning that the required tritium is radioactive and they never mention that the commercial price of it is over $30,000 USD per gram.

Asteroids/meteroids usually have a high concentration 0f rare earth metals, and can be located with historical records and ground penetrating radar.

In dirt, the concentration is low obviously

Have to look for concentrated deposits, in terms of rare earths...

Molybdenum is a permanent magnet, when treated properly with curie temperature magnetization and proper magnetism geometry

That can probably make EVs....

Samarium and neodymium are for fusion reactors and powerful aircraft

14:39 ohhh this is the answer i was looking for when i was at 9th grade. I asked my physics teacher how can earth be so magnetic, we are not metal. How can it pulls to down. Her answer was gravity. She didnt get what im asking😮

@liahamada

Recycling magnets by removing the rare earth metals present in used magnets is much more advantageous.

Besides being cheaper, it's much more sustainable. It avoids all that mining, which is difficult and harmful to the environment, and also reduces dependence on other countries. It's like a two-for-one!

China may be turning the world into a warehouse of rare earth metals found in electric vehicle magnets, etc.

Does the countries to which China sells vehicles have a contract to buy back these magnets?
