The cities we live in are shaped by the way we get around them. Over the past 60 years, with more and more people opting to drive cars, the need for parking spaces has increased with the boom in driving.
Personally I prefer the free parking and I donât care about how it makes a city look
To accommodate that demand early on, cities and towns started requiring developers to include parking with their new buildings after World War II. These policies, known as mandatory parking minimums, set precise standards for parking spaces for each building. And these parking spaces don't come cheap.
To learn much more on free parking's affect on cities, Donald Shoup's book is here: https://www.amazon.com/High-Cost-Free-Parking-Updated/dp/193236496X
The fotoprint of parking in the USA is gigantic, the can build,build multilevels above and underground, save lot of space you can use for greenery, if you build a 10 layer parking of 1100 cars how much space you save . People have use there brains, public transport, can also drops use of cars and space, build underground busparking with park above.

when both plus and minus values are highlight green somenthing doesn't adds up.. (that's about apple logic)
The parking requirement is the only logical, becasue other wise you would pay fortune to either own a parking spot or to rent it.

Public transport, no?

Man oh man I grew up and live in California and every single inch of space is so valuable and everything is so cramped. When I recently went to frisco / Dallas Texas , I was shocked how much parking each individual building had.
@sonidoacuario845RIP Donald Shoup đȘŠ đ
@SilentEireUrbanist created a parking problem by limiting available parking spots and then played smart and provided a "solution" to the problem they themselves created. A "solution" that is just extra burden on those who need the parking spots.
@adamdraskoczi6071RIP Donald Shoup!

@abdullah6909Too bad our previous generations ruined trains and public transportation for the rest of us.
@matthewwalker9171If you need that much parking, that only means your public transportation is horrible. USA cities are not made for pedestrians, they are made for cars.
@mrsanedevWe are not in Japanđ
@Deb-n8gWe have casinos here in Cincinnati no fee to park
@Deb-n8gWe are in America not japan
@Deb-n8gBy the time I pay for the plane tickets, and the casino to stay in and parking at the airport wonât have much left
@Deb-n8gPretty soon no one will go anymore
@Deb-n8gRidiculous to charge me to go to your casino for parking
@Deb-n8gYou cant be serious? Come to Istanbul and see how it looks like when any of those rules applied by the government!
@mr_vagBut but but... America is the best place in the world.
@klang180when there is more parking than city
@mnazas2299the most american video ever
@mnazas2299In Hong Kong the parking lots are under or on top on the shopping malls
@kdramaskimchi2572Parking spots per golf hole or 1 000 gallons of water? đđ
@randomcube999American culture values freedom of movement. I'll go somewhere else to spend money if it has poor parking.
@joe28704donât buy a car . take a robotaxi instead
@Pudhiyadhor-PayanamI've check my girlfriend city code for parking minimum. They knew how much parking they needed for a PLANETARIUM for a population of 100'000. How the heck do you calculate that?
@Davmm96US planning around cars was proven disastrous for the communities over 50 years ago and Jane Jacobs is nowdays an essencial reading for any architectural student..
@marcommatI was shocked on how much infrastructure is centered around cars in US. Now I know where the problem comes from.
@islammurtazaev4891Why donât they just build parking buildings with multiple floors? Instead of taking up a lot of land
@annymp8 Spots for every car and I still can't find a spot
@Seara182Interesting! I am curious as to WHERE those extra 7 parking spots are, because they're so rarely available when I visit anywhere.
@Chan_FryDon't follow Europe's approach to city planning, where there are no parking spaces but you still need to use your car.
@ta2iorThis was paid for by developers lol they stand to make soooo much money if we get rid of parking lot requirements. No citizen actually wants us to get rid of parking lots.
@DKREALFEELfirst take iâve disagreed with, not everyone wants to travel in metro like NYC paris and DC
@grandpantsM4Howâs it bad to have plenty of parking in a country where driving is essential for commuting? Sure if they had more busses, maybe less parking would be required EVENTUALLY, but thatâs not where the issue is. In European cities you mentioned 5:32 parking availability is a massive issue, even with great public transport. In London people sell parking space lots on property websites for around ÂŁ40,000 a year. Donât tell me too much free parking is somehow an issue.
@LiusilaWhen I went to Mexico for the first time I was pleasantly surprised by the proliferation of tienditas on every corner. Anytime you want a drink or a snack or even get stuff for dinner, it was a 5 minute walk. I cant even drive 5 minutes and get to the store where I am, especially because of the traffic.
@XxThePlaylistxXThere still isnt enough parking in atlanta. If we take most of those away, then where am I going to park when I need to go to the city??
@PhozyXnthere is grandiose solution for it. lets not try to play too smart.
@yco67Make a parking skyscraper with a car elevator!!!đ
@zakwindle8859NotJustBikes
@ferryvantichelen6521Americans will pave over their entire city for parking instead of building one railway
@Autonova30% is an extremely expensive dead space. Everyone pays!
@AnthonyTolhurst-dw1ncLose the cars. Sort public transit.
@AnthonyTolhurst-dw1ncThe intentional low frame graphics in vox videos give me headaches
Worst graphic design ever
Taking parking and making buildings was invented by devil. You are super tight and then total demolished and even less space to park.
@ltmikepickI live in an one of an Europe capitol and you are not aware how lucky you are. For authorities in Europe doble the space mean double the housing area, and they build block's of flats without any parking lot at all, or limiting it to a bare minimum. How lucky we are? We are so lucky that having a car in a city is a luxury
@gadomskim93Slightly weird he named amsterdam at the end
