The “it’s the artists decision” part is where you are wrong. It’s really the big record companies like SME, UMG, and WMG that are making those decisions

I still prefer CDs/physical copies of my favorite albums. I only use Spotify to listen to new albums and if there are tracks that I like, I save them. I use Spotify to discover new music.

Spotify is the most accessible because I can always listen to music at any given place so long as I have headphones, not to mention that I don't want my parents to hear the majority of my music so listening to it on my phone is the safest route. HOWEVER. I absolutely fucking love CDs and am aspiring to have an expansive collection, not only for aesthetics, but also because it supports my favorite bands and there's such a novelty to them. I'm not an audio nerd but from what I've heard, I agree that CDs have a nice sound quality. Once I get my own car to put my cds in....its over for y'all. Can't wait. And I sincerely hope CDs never go completely obsolete.

As someone who was an 80s baby and grew up with them, cassettes are a terrible medium and very easily damaged and broken, I am amazed anyone wants them really. They probably are too young to remember how awful they were. Don't get me started on rewinding.

The best part about Spotify or these streaming services in my opinion is - having all the music you can imagine at your finger tips. You can just search a album or artist and have it all right there ready to listen to and that still blows my mind..I can’t tell you how many groups, bands,artists I’ve discovered in the last couple years, or even bands/groups/artists that I use to listen to or forgot about years ago, that i’m re discovering again it’s such a beautiful thing! But yes! There is still a beauty and romance about having\buying physical records or cds that we are always gonna need.. I don’t see streaming services dying anytime soon, but I also don’t see physical copies going away either. We need both and both are important.

I do have some CDs but the main reason why I use streaming services is because I use my phone ALL the time. I don't use Spotify bc I find it annoying but I use other ones.
Also nowadays, EVERYONE'S car has an aux cord/Bluetooth so that makes it harder as well

@justjoannak
@

I think the thing with music also is that artists often don’t make most their money from music sales anymore, they make it primarily from touring and merch so they really do just won’t to get their art out their to as many people and places as possible

@feec4900
@

The streaming services just don't have all of the bonus tracks, aren't categorised according to the right genres and just in general don't satisfy my needs for music consumption.

I’d love to see your reaction and thoughts of MCR’s latest tour, ie tickmaster ruining the opportunity for a lot of fans, the band only scheduling ONE show in the entire country of Canada, ect. do you think it’s fair? do you think they put enough thought and consideration of their fans into scheduling this tour? i’d love to hear

I used to have a 30G Zune and we had the service where it was like $14.99 a month for every song available plus you got to keep 10 songs every month to keep forever. However that service crapped out and now it’s iTunes. I really liked my Zune and that service I miss it.

You get more royalties per stream on Apple Music than on Spotify but Spotify is cheaper

Dear Jon,
Do lyrics really even matter anymore when it comes to modern music? It seems, especially with the advent of apps like TikTok and other forms of short-form viral content, today's popular music is rarely creative from a lyrical perspective. Rather, it's always designed to be dancey and designed for short challenge-type videos. As a result, lyrics tend to be a lot more simple or even clickbait-y. It's always the music that needs to be catchy or a really clever beat that stands out for some reason, but lyrics seem to be getting less attention, and artists seem to be not caring as much for it today. Do you think we'll ever see clever, expressive lyrics in the modern music scene again?
Also, when you're reviewing music, what makes you decide whether or not to pay attention to lyrics from an artist or band? For some acts like Lorde, Twenty One Pilots, and Billie Eilish, lyrics are the main focal point. But for others, it's not as important. I personally like Coldplay's lyric style, but I know you've said in the past that you don't really go to Coldplay for their lyrics. Is there ever a point where good music but terrible lyrics in a song is passable? Or does terrible lyrics always ruin a song?

I have a very extensive CD collection and a growing vinyl collection. It works out very well for me because I love indie music (as in local) and some of the CDs I own are indie bands not available on any streaming platform. Of course I still have a Spotify subscription - especially since I want to be a critic and can’t pay for every album or single to review, but when I listen to Spotify, I listen with earbuds. When I listen to a CD or vinyl, I listen with speakers. The sound quality is exponentially greater.

@StealthheartDraws
@

I keep the files when I buy a CD. Screw screaming. I just want to own digital media.

@LoekTheKing
@

The only way I can see a Netflix-Hulu-Disney+ sort of thing happening is if Warner Music, Sony Music, and Universal Music each made their own, which would never work because no one pays much attention to labels (usually Indie elitists), and bands change labels, and then it’s a fight for bands on Indie labels like Epitaph.

I wish All Shows were on each platform like Netflix and Hulu, but for competition it’s exclusive shows similar to Game Consoles do it.

Are you going to do an album review of Louis tomlinson's new album walls?

@marieangelique810

I've gotten more into streaming since we lost our main music outlet over here. We've recently opened a record store but I try to be selective when purchasing vinyls. Streaming is good for discovering new sounds but it'll never give the same feeling as owning the physical copy, seeing the whole package.

I loved hearing your insight! I use Tidal lol but the only reason I do is because I get it for free with my phone plan lol. It's not the worst but its definitely not as good as spotify lol. I had spotify premium in college with the student rate and it really doesn't get much better than that, their collection is soo vast. Now that I'm a working adult I guess I'm using just Tidal because its essentially "free" for me and I might as well make use of it. I can definitely say that I find Tidal's audio quality to be better but there library is still subpar. Mainly because they don't rights to Hopeless records which annoys me since I enjoy alot of bands and records on that label. Luckily though Hopeless seems to have a deal with Soundcloud so I can supplement as need be. But honestly I agree that we are super privileged to have this kinda music at our fingertips, people need to appreciate what they have and stop being soo entitled.

@CLynn-ip1xi

I enjoyed this video a lot, it was nice that you covered the fans perspective on this but I also wish the perspective of the artist was also covered.

@SLEAZEBAGJONES
@

Streaming makes the music go into the background, with so much other distractions available, music disappears. Furthermore there's lots of similar sounding generic music which makes it hard to distinguish between bands and artists. Plus the marketing push of a lot of 'artists'...

@kkrsnn5632
@

I still use vinyl,CD and cassette.i don't always like depending on the internet for my listening.

@timemerson4162
@

I always either buy or pirate music. The thing is if I like the artist enough I usually buy the vinyl and sometimes cassette, and vinyl comes with free downloads that I don’t use most the time, so it basically balances out.

@islandrebelmakeup4653
@

Spotify isn’t creating original material and I don’t think they will be. Not the same as visual streaming services.

@islandrebelmakeup4653
@

It just genuinely makes me sad how people are so willing to put up with such crap. Wireless headphones (which is almost always worse quality), mp3 files, never paying to actually keep a package of music anymore (just saying, if I buy an approximately $10 CD every month instead of streaming for $10, my collection would grow too quickly for streaming to matter that much), etc.
Streaming certainly has a place, but people are all-in, and it's gonna bite us in the ass. I agree with you, Jon. Especially with how much we take it for granted. Even people who grew up paying for music! Well, I guess a lot of the time, the parents paid for it.

Also, the reason I like CDs is because of the versatility of the physical copy and the ability to digitize it.

@isetmfriendsofire

I think having youtube is a very good thing, even though the quality isn't as good as other streamong services, at least we have a good option for free streaming (works better than spotify free imo). Now just hope that youtube music will never become a big thing

I tend to use Spotify to explore and then if I end up liking it I buy it digitally. I stopped buying CDs because nobody really caries them. Last physical copy I bought was Taylor’s Reputation Album but I use my digital copy more because of convenience.

@squarebarrel
@

I have free Spotify (liked 8tracks ‘til it was killed) to find new talent which I then run over to buy it (usually on iTunes), ‘cause I have 7000 songs in my library so I can’t leave Apple anymore.

@lesleydehaan5898
@

If the cost becomes $50 I genuinely wouldn't subscribe. I understand that people who used to go buy physical copies frequently are saving a lot, but a lot of people didn't and I can imagine I couldn't justify paying so much for music. Whilst YouTube has all this free music too, it'd be difficult to persuade myself.

We used to rely on radio for free listening and entertainment. In a high subscription price situation, do you think radio would regain popularity?

@Lifya
@

I will say though that with CDs, you buy it once and you can listen to it as much as you want essentially forever, where as Spotify you pay to listen to it every month. So for right now I still think its cheaper to go with Spotify, but once prices increase (depending on how much new music you're actually consuming each month vs how much old stuff you're repeating) it could become cheaper to buy CDs. I do really like getting CDs though, I just in general like physical versions of things. But I also like Spotify for the variety, bc there will be an album that I want one song from, and that way I'm not forced to buy the entire album to listen to that one song

@elise85391
@

Moral of the story: BUY CD'S OR MERCH TO SUPPORT LOCAL AND FAVOURITE ARTISTS!

Aaliyah’s music isn’t available on any streaming services I’m glad I have the physical copies
