Why were so many drivers penalised for speeding in the pits in Monaco - and why are Pierre Gasly and his Alpine team so convinced what we saw was so unjust that they think they can get the result overturned?

00:00 Alpine fury at Monaco GP penalties

When FIA being rule by a terrorist….

— @DTI.M

02:28 What on earth was going on?

04:38 So did the drivers actually do anything wrong?

If these cars have cut the corner on entry and or exit (which is not against the rules) then they have actually covered less distance in the same time. So their average speed will be less, not more than the speed limit. Gasly, Alpine and the other penalised drivers have a very valid complaint.

So basically, during a normal pit stop, you could just speed af, do the pit stop, and speed out of it cuz they just measure the average speed? Anyways, what a circus

While the FIA and FOMs equipment settings was faulty (if you walk past someone and they smell like poop they stepped in pop, if everyone you walk past smells like poop, you stepped in poop), I doubt they can over turn the results simply because some teams served the penalty in the race. Also there were follow on consequences for drivers like george whos false speeding penalty was the start of a cascade of strategy decisions and miscommunications, so how do you undo that after he served a drive through penalty in the race? Do you just put him back at p4? or p3? of where would he have ended the race were there 0 penalties to begin with?

I think its a bad weekend and you gotta move on because its not feasible to change the outcome with so many difference cascading circumstances

because they wanted to make Monaco more exiting for the fans. because they don't understand what the fans want

I feel robbed by the lack of V10 or V8 volume, but alas, I take my penalty and watch old videos from another time and version of said former F1 fun

F1 is a regulation race instead of a car race.

@christianellegaard7120

Same way Ben Sulayem won the FIA election - he just counted how many votes he stuffed into ballot box on himself, and pulled them out and just counted those.

@yhgaryxu
@

Now the problem is identified, the FIA should ammend the results.

This is just like my high school physics teacher who pulled out a test when you have to calculate the average velocity of an object that comes back and forth at different speeds in a circuit (let’s say a 1km lane) and ends up where it started or just at the opposite end of the circuit. Everyone loses a ton of time adding and dividing, while the answer is v=O if the object is at the place where it started or 1km/ the total amount of time it took. It teaches you one very important lesson: definitions matter! And speed isn’t always interchangeable with velocity.

@luiskp7173
@

So they didn't go over the speed limit but were speeding... Riiight

@into_the_void

You have to question why the his race engineer didnt tell Gasly about the pens to give him a (slim) chance of building a 10 sec gap.

The track need changing.Not enough passing opportunities.

@barry1972-b3i

If this was at a regular track,it would be much clearer.

@barry1972-b3i

So many drivers? It was 5 out of 22. And they had all been told to not cut the corner in the driver briefing. It's their own fault.

@HumbunsWoofshine

Formula Lame........ what a joke of a race and formula.

@paa6397
@

It’s this sort of thing that occasionally rears its head in F1 and that’s why the championship is seen as a joke by many people these days. They’re the “pinnacle” of motorsport yet they create the most ridiculous and dumb issues constantly out of nowhere due to complete incompetence.

@Liam94Smith

Only a regulator can balls things up to this extent!! The offense is speeding and they didn't!! If they can't change the result which they may not be able to, they could allocate the points to the penalised drivers as it should have been without the post race penalties and including Russell as his offense was to not comply with a penalty that should not have existed. Fine Merc if you wish as it was the team that failed to act, not the driver.

Yes change the test so speeding means speeding and not the FIA cocking things up looking like speeding.

@mick_6006
@

Maybe, just MAYBE, for once in their lives the drivers might actually stay within the designated marked lane. They know full well they are BEYOND the track lines but then whine like stuck pigs when it bites them in the arse. Thank you FiA for sharpening the knife.

@Stub13
@

Just follow the lines
Why nobody is talking about Russell backing every body up and cousins 2 collisions

@MrBreakjunior
@

Just get rid of Monaco, it’s a pointless race. This weekends was as dull as usual with the only interest coming from crashes and penalties

@CM9999999999
@

Is the FIA drunk?

@4rled
@

We know what happened. Those penalised cut the corner on the exit so travelled between sensors too quickly

@CM9999999999
@

I was watching the race for the stewards not the drivers or racing….

@jakkeravik
@

Can someone please tell me why this track still exists on F1 calendar ?

@F1Creed
@

They weren't robbed of anything. They were warned before the race to not drive over the white pit line otherwise it would mess with the pit speed, but they drove over the line cutting the corner. It's their own fault.

@Individua777
@

Petty childish FIA rules is killing the sporty.

@mariuspotgieterproject3437
@

The pit entry isn’t straight at Monaco. If the speed censors are set out as to follow the curve of the entry road and the cars cut the curve then the censors are not accurate

@AgentLynch616
@

I don't get why they don't just use the telemetry.... they know exactly how fast the car is going at all times.

@beachgaara
@

What's the point of having a white line then!? If the regs say you are allowed to drive over it!? What is it denoting? Seems to me every driver should be penalised then? They could have stayed in the fast lane on entry and exit like all other circuits, but in trying to get a tenth of a second by taking a shortcut some got penalties and others didn't. And if it's a case of the cars can't turn sharply enough to stay in the fast lane, then either the pitlane is unsuitable for the cars, or vice versa.

@matthewhollis1858
@

Over turn this result and we're coming for Abu Dhabi 2021

@ibrahimtarfa7941
@

Gasly was only on the podium because Russell got a drive through, for not serving his speeding penalty correctly. If the faulty penalties hadn't been issued, Russell wouldn't have got his drive through. And that's the reason that the FIA can't retrospectively rescind those penalties - it would be equally unfair to those who served them during the race, or worse, got penalised for not taking a penalty they shouldn't have had in the first place.

@spikyone79
@

IF SAFETY was of concern then penalty for 9kmh over would not be 900$ but $90k and penalty for 1kmh over would be 10k not 100$.
AND ALSO, if safety is concern, then the REAL SPEED of the car at any given moment would be used, NOT this mental "average whatever".
Because that means I can run into pit stop with 300kmh, wait some time and then proceed to go back out and I would not get penalized.
FIA, FIFA and all other pedophile centers needs to be dismantled and rebuilt. It is clear these people do not care for anything.

F1 imo has become SO dull and corporate... F 1 need's to start all over again... as it is at the moment, it will become less and less interesting.. imo their more excitment on the dodgem's in a fairground than F1 !.

@MrRRHHMM

Fuck $100 penalty. I hope they are doing fine

@DavidHeath-i5w

As so many were fined and warned during practice, the issue was known to the drivers and 75% of the drivers managed to avoid penalties during the race.....which implies driver error in cutting the white line.

F1 is getting pathetic it's killing itself

@ChristopherMoore-j6u

Honestly, it’s things like this that are turning fans away and making drivers contemplate some hard decisions. If formula 1 can’t even time cars in the pits correctly what are we all doing here.

Also, honestly what’s the point of a track so thin no one can overtake, when we were all told the new cars and boost and overtakes would bring more overtaking and more excitement. Next minute the track is coming apart and people are caught “speeding” while on the other side of the track drivers deliberately slow down the entire field to let their team mate make some headway, knowing full well it’s almost impossible to go around the one slowing everyone down. What a pathetic race.

@morphshag

not so many, only about 1/3 other 2/3 was perfectly good
