As a football fan with only high school playing experience, I enjoyed your video and the explanation. You may be onto something with your “read the grass” strategy. IMO—the best coaches are the best teachers, and if you can simplify the game like this and distill concepts into a universal strategy, the more advantage you will provide your players.

This is totally dependent on the scheme. What youre talking about was originally a run and shoot concept. Running to grass as they would say. Progressions work well with a scheme such as the west coast system. Its timing based on in the air raid/spread, its not as feesible due to the concepts they use. Also we have to be real about modern qbs, theyre not as fundamentally sound as previous eras. This factors into timing routes. In a R&S offense, you dont have progressions per se. Its more pre and post snap reads. Which is difficult for a modern QB. Again, these kids aren’t being taught to read the defenses as they once did. I know youve seen it, especially in air raid systems. Theyre not reading a defense the same way a west coast qb would be asked to.

Fantastic video. Regarding your suggestion, open areas on the field aren't static, they're dynamic, so they run into the same issue with DB's rotating after the snap.

All this makes me feel that play-caller in the NFL could have been another one of my successful careers. I grasp everything you're saying. I think that Doug Pederson really understood the triangles & the problems that everyone blamed on him later in his tenures in PHI & JAX resulted from him delegating play-calling to inferiors. Hey, why do two jobs when someone else is getting paid for the 2nd one?
If one watches the Jags, O in '22 most of their plays would fly out of 1-4 formations. It would be complex for even the QB to follow unless he knew in advance where the receivers would end up.
What you said about coaches overloading rookie QBs made me think of Caleb but that's not really the case there. He's simply inaccurate. Even his two bomb TD throws week 3 were drastically under-thrown & only that terrible D gave him enough room to make those look good. On the opposite end of that scale you have the Jets refusing to give fields more than the absolute minimum amount of reads as if they think he's mentally challenged. As a result he's making incredible throw to covered receivers that can't get open because they're not stressing out defenses.
