Straightforward Career and Job Advice

Video Overview & Insights

It’s all too common for us to think of our work as either the thing that gives us our identity, or something to be avoided at all cost, or some unhealthy combination of those two misleading philosophies. In this video, Fr. Mike aims to bring inspiration to our everyday jobs by showing us how our labor can be a way to share in God’s nature. By striving to look past humanity’s brokenness and sin, we can move beyond seeing work as a burden, and see how every act of work has dignity.

If you watching this video because you are lost in life and don’t know what to do, focus on optimizing physical energy. Stay hydrated and feed your mind and body good things. Your energy levels have to be optimized in order to get the best results.

Ascension Presents … Fr. Mike Schmitz (http://bit.ly/2sKUnJN)

Fr. Mike spoke at the Ascension Cafe during the World Meeting of Families. Watch him and other speakers get fired up over the gospel in the Ascension Cafe DVD (http://bit.ly/2sYtQaW).

I (17m) successfully entered a Social Work program at the top-ranking university in my country. Only 12% of applicants get in. However, sometimes I feel like I am trading money purpose. Social Work may or may not be a lucrative career -- and the uncertainty makes me endlessly worry about my future, and if I will be able to sustain myself financially. I could switch majors, but even that has no certainty.

I prayed for this moment, but now that I have it... I feel distraught.

I want to be financially independent in the future. But I also want impact.

There's gotta be some kind of reasoning that I'm blameless.\nI don't think so I can just go around sending even when I was showing trying to show justice and you know how guilty I felt, but I knew that I was blaming us, but still, I would never do nothing too bad at 1 hurt.Nobody else anyways

What if the work entails promotion of something unholy like advertisements, marketing, mass consumption, or branding of products that doesn't honour the teachings of the church on marriage, sex, etc? Is there still dignity in that labour?

Sorry I don't agree with video, we would not have any doctors and artist ant other complicated careers if we just work. I would suggest to work and study. If you want to change your life you need to change qualification, career (it is old wisdom).

The gardeners, the fishermen and the carpenters. God gives people these vocations. God gives everyone their vocations. Jesus is the host, the flesh and blood, the son of God, the prince of peace, and the prophet from far away planet that was here instead 2,000+ years ago. we should all look in the mirror and find Jesus deep inside, layer thru layer, down to the very core, the heart of our very being, the soul must be recognized and boom! Heal the onion. Heal your layers, Onions!

I'm 2nd year accounting student. I have a law major called business law, our atty prof wants us to memorize back to back summary for quiz, then study half of the syllabus, almost 10 case studies all for the recitation on Saturday. I know I can't do it, iI still have other majors. Every Sunday I'm so tired to wake up that I missed the morning mass that's why I wasn't able to attend mass. I spend less time with my family because I prioritize study. Idk what to do, I still haven't memorized all and studied all, I'm so doomed... Now I'm worried for my future, I'm afraid,, I wanna hold on to God but I'm scared.. I lost my faith,, will anyone give some peace of advise?

Catholic social teaching says we should not support exploitative enterprises so I get OCD about working for the right company, etc.

Thank you for this, Father! The world pushes on us that you should do (and is the only thing, they say, to make work worth it) what you would do for free. I see now, how that mentality encourages one to have an identity in what they do. The enemy is crafty, indeed. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

why does ecclesiastes say its all meaningless ? Ecclesiastes 2:11, from the New International Version, states: "Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun."

Try working in a data and/or content production center where hours are long (100+), pay is dismal, managers are awful, promotion non-existent, and burnout rate HIGH. Oh and guess what, the more/better you do ["for the glory of Gd"], the more work you get. Nothing fixed my job other than quitting and finding another. Sorry no amount of devoting labor to the Lord fixed that!

I always thought that you have to find a work that fulfills you, that' s going to give your life a meaning.

This, Fr. Mike, summarizes what I needed to hear. Thank you for reminding us that whatever work we do, it can be our worship to God. And yes, it's Monday so I'll get to work later 😂

@maerree
@

i have never thought about it this way.... work has meaning because we (humans) are doing it... so the work doesn't have meaning on its own, but because humans are doing it, it has... or at least it has dignity... This makes me think of this: "I wasn't created to mold into a specific job position, but different job positions were made for each human to express their inner God-given tendency to work in their unique way." I wasn't made for work, work was made for me. That's interesting. . .

Genuine question: what if someone is doing a job that is clearly sinful, like prostitution or drug dealing? Does that work have any dignity? Or is it not counted as work?
