Staggered big-time oil price hike begins | ANC
Video Overview & Insights
Dateline Philippines: Motorists across the country are facing a sharp spike in fuel prices as a series of oil price hikes took effect on Tuesday (March 10), driven by rising tensions in the Middle East that continue to threaten global fuel supply.
Implementing electric vehicles for public utility vehicles in the Philippines is one of the most practical and high-impact ways to address rising fuel costs and inflation. Public transport, jeepneys, buses, and tricycles, relies heavily on diesel and gasoline, making it highly vulnerable to global oil price fluctuations. By shifting these vehicles to electric, the country can significantly reduce its dependence on imported fuel and stabilize one of the biggest cost drivers in the economy.
The transition, however, is not just about replacing vehicles. It requires a coordinated approach that includes financial support, infrastructure development, and system reorganization. Electric units are more expensive upfront, so drivers and operators need subsidies and access to low-interest financing to make adoption feasible. At the same time, charging infrastructure must be strategically deployed, particularly in terminals and along major routes, to ensure reliability. Organizing drivers into cooperatives can further improve efficiency by centralizing ownership, maintenance, and operations.
Once implemented, the benefits are substantial. Electric PUVs have much lower operating costs compared to diesel vehicles, especially in terms of daily energy expenses and maintenance. This allows drivers to retain more income while helping keep fares stable for passengers. On a broader scale, reduced fuel consumption lowers the country’s import bill and shields the economy from external oil price shocks, contributing to more stable inflation over time.
In the long run, the transition becomes even more powerful when paired with investments in renewable energy and localized power generation such as solar or waste-to-energy systems. This ensures that the electricity powering these vehicles is not only cheaper but also sustainable. Ultimately, electrifying public transport is not just a technological upgrade, it is a structural economic reform that improves energy security, supports livelihoods, and creates a more resilient and stable economy.

Thanks to Trump. He promised no foreign wars and a stronger economy. Instead, not only the US but the global markets are reeling, and the economy is taking a significant hit.
