Singers With the Widest Vocal Ranges (5+ Octaves!)

Video Overview & Insights

I saw Matthew Dockray's video on bass singers' vocal ranges and thought I should do one of my own but with singers of any voice type (and any with over 5 octaves).

PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU COMMENT:

Because I am still getting comments saying “You forgot [singer X]” or “[singer X] has [X range]”, chances are I did not forget them. They either
1) Do not have 5 octaves,
2) Their range has increased since the time of making this video,
3) They have 5 octaves but have not demonstrated this range on tape, or
4) They have not demonstrated this range with enough quality to warrant inclusion in the video.

There is a possibility that I did miss some singers, but most of the time it is one of the 4 mentioned.

— @BassManMatteo

I tried to include only notes that I thought were countable, but what is considered “countable” is debatable. Feel free to ask any questions about why I did/didn’t include a particular note.

PLEASE CAN SOMEONE TELL OF THE SONG DIMASH SANG IN THE FIRST CLIP PLEASE!

So if you take the highest low note and lowest high note in this whole video you get a range of about B2-A5 which is already a solid range in and of itself

It is very interesting issue uneasy to explain. People classify voices to bass, baritone, tenor ect. But singers existed and exist, who have wide range uneasy to classify. I know one dissertation about female voices Soprano sfogato, who can sing as alto, mezzo, soprano, because of ability to move throat. If they want to sound well at all range, they must train more than usual voices, and they must train all subranges. Other people think it is impossible. They say human can sing better only in one range, even if able to produse any sound in wider range.

Do you know any theoretical explanations of it?

I'd love to see Colm McGuinness in one of these too. He's got a mad range. Go listen to his performance in Song of Durin with Anthony Young and Bobby the Bass. I think he goes down to about a G0, and up to A5. (And then there's his performance in Wasteland... he goes at least to A5, maybe higher)

Missing Tim Storms: G -7 to A4.

You should've separated this by sex. Female sopranos, on average, have the widest ranges.

5:00 Nah, Dimash has hit an E1 on camera just look up ‘Dimash, ascolta la voce’ so his real vocal range is 6 octaves and 10 semitones. Though I’m not sure if the correct pitch is E1. For all I know it could be much lower than that! In fact some people say that he hit a G0 once, but others say that clip was just a G1. If it was G0, it would be pretty damn cool that he can hit a note two semitones lower than the piano, and 2 semitones higher as well!

My vocal range is from A#-1 to A#9

0:55, as a musician and as a vocalist and as a person who has perfect pitch, I’m telling you, that there were no F#2. The lowest note she hits at that “You and I” video was Bb2. Even if you don’t believe me than listen to that part again - even the harmony doesn’t go to F#2, it stops on Bb2.
But now about her voice in general, on a good day she can go to A2 I think, maybe G#2 or even G2, the thing is, that her voice, over the years, got lower and lower, so her range became more huge over the years. If you listen to her 90s live videos it’s hard for her to hit lower than C#3/C3, even at that 2005 video “You and I” you can see and hear how Bb2 was hard and uncomfortable for her.

@Dindikar
@

A lot of them are not realistic, just squeezy in a whistle register on the high notes and then almost growled on the lower notes, they don't sound natural, do they? In the end is just a matter of personal taste...

What if you go to your lowest notes then use false cords for death metal or khagyrra throat singing they are thicker than the regular vocal cords so that adds even more on that end 🤔🤔🤔
