The Science Behind Dramatically Better Conversations | Charles Duhigg | TED

Video Overview & Insights

The key to deeply connecting with others is about more than just talking — it's about asking the right kinds of questions, says journalist and author Charles Duhigg. He explores research-backed tools to have more meaningful conversations, sharing a simple yet powerful approach to transform how you communicate. (Recorded at TEDxManchester on March 3, 2024)

I tried this experiment with a guy who was shopping for a new gun safe at Walmart. He replied with the contemporary equivalent of what used to be, "Go fly a kite." Or "Go jump in a lake."

I durst not repeat in a public forum what his real words were. (Ie, "expletive deleted. ")

I was uncertain how to proceed from that "point in time", as they used to say in the Watergate inquiries.

So, Practical conversation is about the talking about facts and solutions which we often do and emotional conversations is about the empathy not about the solutions and the social conversation is about (we/us) it's not about the personal thing of one person but about the people which means it might be the conversation of mixture of practical and emotional conversations both.
What you'll think about it??

You go to the doctor for medical advise, not for a therapy session... It is great to be aware people have different expectations from a conversation, but it is much more helpful they take responsibility for their role in conversations.

This was incredibly useful because good conversations really do change every part of life from friendships to business to confidence. The part about asking deeper questions and actually making people feel understood stood out the most. Most conversations stay surface level because people listen just to reply instead of trying to connect. And really liked how practical everything was. Small changes in the way we talk and listen can completely change the quality of our relationships. Definitely one of the most valuable TED Talks I’ve watched in a while.

I love this framework for approaching conversation — however I genuinely think the overwhelming vast majority of answers to the main question will be: a) I don’t remember a time of that b) I don’t feel comfortable sharing.

Though, I’m sure once you find someone who doesn’t answer with either of those, it may be rewarding.

After a doctor told me that instead of an immediate solution (surgery) you can actively monitor it for the next few years with visits twice a year.

The active monitoring sounds like a absolute money drain especially in the US

Anyone that wants to take body language and communication seriously, the book "how to win friends and influence people" written in 1936 addresses this topic in a less pedantic way. Understanding communication is not a new topic

It’s actually simple. Just shut up and listen to that person that needs to talk. Your advice won’t change anything, they’ll feel better and decide what to do after they feel they’ve been listened to. A good conversation is to stay as quiet as possible

He fumbled and then fumbled again
Struggled with pacing of his voice, tone and pitch
But atlast it's about how you handle it and that's what sets people like him apart from majority!

But it’s different when the experiment is in a study or real life because of the source of the order
If an outside authority figure makes us talk about crying, that differs fundamentally from if I’m the one who initiated

Emotional conversation = how do you/we feel

Practical conversation = what is this really about(problem and solution oriented)

Social conversation = we we are(identity) and how do we relate to each other and society

Good advice. Bad example. Who TF goes to the Dr. if not for medical advice?! Don’t get me wrong I worked in clinical healthcare and there were THOSE patients who did this. But in general, I’m gonna raise an eyebrow if my Dr. asked me that after diagnosing me with cancer.

I love when the Anglo-American small talk culture is realising that it is not even close to human interaction, no matter how many Wutherin Heights will be distributed around the world… and now they are setting up science to be able to prove that it’s ok to ask real questions from another person and it is ok to get closer and get to know each other… welcome to Europe! You used to say everyone is so “rude”, and “blunt” here but on the contrary: we were the normal all along and asked: what do you like about your job instead of meaningless what do you do…

Modern science and sociology: conversation and humans are complex. Humans are emotional, let them be emotional by asking questions

Ancient spiritual practices: be mindful of others and be compassionate in your conversations. The other person may be focused on a problem that isn’t the topic of the current conversation

People will tend to be defensive during a conversation when challenged or their beliefs are challenged…..even if they ask a question and you respond with a truthful answer.

The ego is powerful and most people have no idea that is what is controlling their decisions

When you talk to a surgeon you should expect solutions and not be wasting both his and your time dumping your emotions on him. The fault was most definitely with the patients not the surgeon.

@mikenewey3949

I think this is awesome.

But it’s also kind of disappointing that we no longer have the ability to connect with our fellow humans naturally.

Too many distractions and division.
